Yeah I guess that’s true you could poor some oil over the cartridge before you installed it but I don’t think it’s going to do all that much but if it makes you feel better about your maintenance then it’s worth it

That should never be a concern.... Or even think that you're damaging yer engine .... Any rig I've ever owned, after changing oil/filter, it's never ever been more than an extra couple seconds before the oil psi came up to full speed.

    Oh, C'mon now .....
Look, when you change yer oil/filter as you should ... When the oil/engine is hot.....
Everything in the engine is lubed up.
When you cold start the engine in the morning and it takes a 1-2 seconds for the oil PSI to come up ... Who 'worries' about that?
When you change the oil/filter and it takes maybe ... MAYBE ... an extra second or two (Oil filter filling up) for the oil PSI to come up?
This is what you're worried about? Really???? C'mon now...

Where are all these engines that are blowing up because the filter wasn't pre-filled with oil?

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet in the next 14 pages but I wanted to respond to this. Toyota is not perfect. Just for example, the 2005-2015 2tr-fe owners manuals told everybody when you change the oil with a filter it is 6.3 quarts. Well guess what, in 2018 they release an update that OPPS it's actually 5.5 quarts for a fill up. .8 quarts heavy on the poor doesn't sound like much but you definitely don't want an overfilled engine.

Another factor you have to consider is the benefits that vehicle manufactures get by having longer oil drain intervals. Kind of like the "lifetime" transmission fluid that doesn't exist because there is no such thing. All that being said as long as you change your oil at least once a year OR at 10,000 miles will you probably be fine? Yes probably, as long as you check your oil levels to make sure if you are burning oil you add it back. A big problem with these long drain intervals is a lot of newer engines burn oil by design and when you are pushing a 10,000 mile oil interval most people don't bother checking their oil until the oil light comes on and by then it's too late.

or oil changed at 20 miles due to too much [whatever] in the oil because, obviously Toyota has ZERO idea What they are talking about

You do realize that when you get an oil change you are not removing every last drop of oil from your engine right? There is more than enough lubrication to last 1-2 seconds after changing your oil I promise.

Wow that is interesting, I had an 08 and a 15 and always used 5.5 Quarts which I assumed I got from the Owners Manual, but my 17 says 6.2 though.

It's a reference to a previous post of mine. Point is, change it early, change it late, change it never and you're still probably gonna go 100k. Just do whatever u wanna do people, and be good humans. Don't litter, tell your friends you love em, help out the less fortunate and take care of your vessel.

I like the term as well! It's a fairly common rock climbing term. The Crux is like the hardest move in the whole climb. It slips out ever now-n-again.

I had a 09, it said 6.3 with filter :/ Keep in mind this is for the 2tr-fe only. the 4.0 is 5.5 quarts with the larger oil pan and 5 quarts if its the smaller oil pan.

Speaking for the 2tr-fe only here (05-15)
    VISCOSITIES:
All TEMPS....0W-20 0W-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and starting in cold weather. If 0W-20 is not available 5W-20 may be used. However, it must be replaced with 0W-20 at the next oil change.
CAPACITIES: With filter 5.5 quarts After refill check oil level. Top off to proper level as needed. This specification has been updated per the most current service information 5/15/2018.
    TORQUES: Oil Drain Plug...28 ft/lbs
