I've heard GTMO 0/16/20 is quite high in moly

You can get it changed at 5k under Toyota Care...you can get it changed whenever you want; but you only get 2. At least, that's my understanding.

When I went for the 5k service they actually made a point that it didn't include an oil change. Of course I had done it so I didn't object or ask for one.

Yeah Toyota care specifically says on their website for the 5K service is just to check the fluids rotate tires and vehicle inspection it’s every 10 K for the oil change

My local dealer was nice enough to just give me 7 bottles of oil and a filter at 6 months under the Toyota Care and a year later they did the same and gave me a cabin filter. I rather do this stuff myself.

Didn't know that. I have a 10k service coming up on our Camry, I may just ask for the oil.

I have a good relationship with my dealer. I went to parts and they gathered the stuff up and had service make a w/o. They did ask to see the odometer. I don't think dealers make much money on Toyota Care.

Read somewhere on a exxon/mobil motor oil site that the toyota synthetic motor oil supplied by them has the highest concentration of moly than standard mobil 1 synthetic 0-20w oil or other oils for that matter. I can attest by the price, it sure costs more.

You must be right...at my first service they wouldn't even replace my oil filter cause i didn't meet the required mileage. I had a hard enough time just getting them to change the oil at 4k miles.

I would tell them to put me under the "severe service" category. I would also tell them you also Idle 3 hour a day. one dropping the kids to school, one picking up the kids and one in traffic to and from work. It be interesting lol!

That said I believe all TOYOTA dealers buy the oil in bulk from them under a contract. They may still be using Mobil 1, it's the one they were using when I bought my '16.

When selecting the oil, I pick a top oil brand that's abundant everywhere at a reasonable price. Mobil 1 in my case and stick to it, the reason being is that different oils have different additive formulas and switching brands back and forth can leave nasty deposits inside the engine.

Thanks for posting this and advising the early oil change. I have only had a few new engines, but I always changed the oil super early. Unfortunately, I drove this one 1000 miles home when purchased (took forever with lots of stop and cool down cycles, and RPM/speed changes). I changed it at 1400 and wished I had at 500. I will changed again at 5K. My last new truck was a Tundra. When I took it in the for the 5k service, I requested an oil change. It was like a big fight to get them to change it. I understood I didnt get it for free and just wanted it changed early because I wanted it to last. You should have seen them flip their lid when I requested a transfluid change at 10K.

So that means Toyota oil is better than Mobil 1 for example?

    Just my $.02

5-10k is just fine for most. That being said I go super overkill on maintenance just because it gives me piece of mind. And that’s really what most of it boils down to. I do the same with my trucks and bikes: 500, 1500, 3k, 5k then every 5k after that. If I don’t hit 5000 in a year (bikes mostly but sometimes the truck) I still change it every spring. I do gearboxes at the first 1k then at every 10k mark.

Some people will say this is way overkill, I completely agree. But it’s what I do because it’s my shit and that’s all that matters!

Not to be argumentative, but better for what? Toyota apparently thinks that higher moly content is desirable in the 0w-16/0w-20 oil Mobil supplies for them. Ford may have other ideas. As would Detroit Diesel or ............. The high moly content may lead to problems such as deposits in other makes of engines. Then there is the topic of what kind of moly?

"Better" in this case would be highly subjective. For what it's worth, I use TGMO in both of my Toyotas.

I would say what brand of oil a dealer uses may not be the genuine toyota oil in all cases. After my 5000 mile service the dealership placed an oil change reminder sticker for the 10,000 miles service displaying the Pennzoil brand.. so that may mean that is the brand they use? Not Toyota or mobile 1.
I think that because if they contact with a supplier for Pennzoil the supplier would include those stickers in the deal.

Neither the dealership I bought my Toyotas from, nor the local dealership use TGMO. Unless you request it and are willing to pay an upcharge. I change my own for what it's worth.

Related to the original post, I would be interested to see the oil analysis results from maybe 5-10 trucks done at 3,000 miles, 5,000 miles, and 10,000 miles. Unfortunately a single data point at 3,000 miles doesn't do much to show that 10,000 miles is a bad time to do the first oil change.

Another important factor of course is the effect on the wear of components associated with the levels seen in the OP, which is much harder to quantify without analyzing high mileage and/or failed engines.
