There is a lot of good information here about the initial oil change so I’m hoping that others will find it useful. I’ll sum up the findings in a bit.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
Dealer is changing mine for "free" every 10K.

But I'm old fashioned so I'm going to pay out of pocket for another oil change at the 5K mid-point between dealership changes.

Point of this thread is that additional change is pointless outside of your first change. The point of the OP is to suggest that it's not crazy to do a break in oil change before your first scheduled change.

The shop owner that I talked to suggested 1k 3k then your normal intervals. I would think at the very least a change after your break in period at 1k or so makes sense.

I did my initial change at 3500km's and now every 10,000km's. I'm sure the Toyota techs are smarter then us however YOU are really the only person who knows how the truck is daily driven.. If you beat the shit out of it, more frequent i would suggest. If you baby it and put on easy miles, extended intervals sure.

Because, Toyota engineers do not say to do this.

How difficult is that to understand? Millions of Toyotas are running around with 200-300K miles with the first change at 10K... with zero issues.

No early oil change, no catch can nonsense, just following the ol manual and oblivious to all this. Just imagine how many Tacoma owners there are that just drive their stock truck around and never come to a forum or group. I would estimate 90%, and the same for 10K initial changes, with no problems!
That's why threads like this turn into Crusades almost. Some guy believes his way is better, he tells the world expecting alignment and kudos for pointing it out and then... realizes not everyone is on board so he keeps pushing. And pushing.

It's not hard to understand but its your opinion that this is necessary. All of those elements where in your oil within the first few miles and didn't do any damage in the 3K miles you left them in for. What says they will do damage if left for 10K? There's millions of data points to show otherwise.

If you want to change it that's fine but this isn't the smoking gun that you think it is for an early oil change.

To give a quick summary here :
This thread was about INITIAL OIL CHANGE. As per the very post.

These are the findings compared to THE SAME engines with 7200 miles on average on SUBSEQUENT NOT INITIAL OIL changes.

My oil with slightly less than 3000 miles

    5X the amount of alumnium
    2X the amount of iron
    20x the amount of copper
20x the amount of silicone etc

Make your own decision based on facts. Facts are that the metal levels are severely elevated at 3000, 4000 and 7000 due to engine break in during the first oil change interval.

Different trucks with different owners, in different states. However all show the same exact pattern. Want to keep in longer? Sure. But if you were wondering what's floating there from the factory during break in... this is your best bet to find out.

Lab report #2 with 4000 miles also showing
    3x the iron at least
    30x the copper

    Oil Report #3
    Also showing
    3x Iron
    20x the Copper
    10x+ silicone

The 6.1 quarts specification used to give me all kinds of grief when I needed oil changes on my 2009 4-cylinder, because that much oil always brought the level to half an inch above the TOP mark on my dipstick. This was the equivalent of a full quart. No one could ever give me a clear answer as to whether/why to trust the specs or the dipstick, and all the service providers wanted to go strictly by the specs. Even the dealer insisted that their specs were perfect. But what I have found with my last few oil changes, is that Toyota has (quietly) changed the specs, so now the computers are showing that my truck should get 5.5 quarts. They should have to fess up for all the grief. My late husband went into a frenzy the first time I checked the dipstick after an oil change. He was an amazing carpenter, but he hated auto stuff. But he had two different friends who did a lot of auto work, telling him that it would blow a gasket. I spent the next two days fighting with Jiffy Lube.

Wow this thread is really making me question if I want to buy another used vehicle without a complete engine disassembly & inspection .

You probably did more harm than good on that INITIAL oil change. All those little particles your talking about fill in the groves and help everything to seat properly. There's you real science for you.

Had a Honda Odyssey with about 100 K and got the tranny flushed by a trans specialist shop. Within 15K after that tranny was toast. Never again.

None to speak of, just enjoying it for the moment.
Does anyone know (for sure) whether the oil put in the engine at the factory is any different than the oil used or sold by Toyota for subsequent oil changes. I ask because if the oil initially put in the engine is designed to "clean" or break-in the engine then removing it real early might not be the best plan. Just curious...

Going to do the same. The final break-in mileage point is 1k. I figure there will be extra material in the oil as it breaks in that I don’t want floating around another 9k.

They do. It is then ran, flushed, new normal oil installed then they install engine in truck.

First change at 2000 mi. Just a habit with new cars that i have. I have a service appointment scheduled in 2 weeks for my 5000 mi oil change at dealer. After my first two changes I'll stick to the 5k schedule.
