Gotta be carful there. That report just shows the motor oil had x y z concentrations of those elements. You would have to make the inference/ assumption that the high levels will lead to premature motor wear.

a real scientific experiment would be with dozens or thousands of trucks with the same motors and assembly dates. Group A would have the first motor oil changed at 800 miles and group B would have a change at 10k. From that point all the trucks in the experiment would need to be driven/maintained the same for the remainder of the engine life. Only then can you collect the data and make a conclusion that group A lasted longer than group B due to changing the oil.

be carful in how you interpret data. When you have a lot of complex variables not held constant for a study you need to employ statistics and make inferences which compromises the certainty of your conclusions. Most published papers have certainty that teeters on a coin toss conclusion (drug studies , nutrition...). Sometimes is hard to separate correlation from causation too.

The wider and more complex the scientific question being answered the more uncertainty there will be. There are definitely answers which are totally clear that scientists have answers for. but they are typically for things which have definite and clear experimental results proven over decades.

my actual job title is scientist  ...analytical to be specific (I perform the same elemental analysis on an “ICP-MS” , one of the methods they use for your oil analysis )

I think you're right. I got an email a couple weeks ago from the dealer .. A 'reminder' for maint. I've had my Taco for 6 months now and they assumed I had 5K miles on it already (Only 3.3K so far) and the 5K was for tire rotation and oil/filter IF it came with 'conventional' oil. Well, I don't think any new rig in the last 20 years comes new with 'conventional' oil anymore, so I just took that as a 'boiler-plate' email.

Most of those contaminants were likely present within the first 100 miles or less. If they didn't damage anything in the first 3 or 5K miles what makes you think they would in 10K?

Nothing untrue here. The biggest problem, and this includes, brakes, transmissions, engines, oil coolers and pretty much anything else, is they think their ONE data point is important! Sure, it's important to them for sure, but not in the grand scheme of things.
That is one problem. The other is the vast diversity of the training levels of the people who post here. There are some with tech backgrounds but... trying to convince a 25yo accountant who has never turned a wrench... of pretty much anything... is an uphill battle.

    For qhat it's worth:

I have read the science and tests and all that crap.

Like most things, it goes to shit in real world applications. Cost probitive to test all conditions to failure.

I have seen all too well as a 20yr technician what prolonged oil change intervals even with the best synthetic CAN do (not will, but what can and has happened) to engines.

3k oil changes or a total waste on synthetic unless you have oil dilution issues (turbo direct injection engines). 5-6k is where things should be changed, excluding first change, thats debated. 1k, 3k, 5k.

No way in hell for any amount of money would I do 10k unless it was all highway cruising.

Our society is so screwed up... people will go buy a product costing hundreds of dollars based on "reviews" or likes from people who don't even know how to open a box.
Yet, when smart people tell them something that is factual... like science.... they all of a sudden have their own opinion.
They follow herd mentality in one place and act contrarian in another.
That's why my job does not involve the ordinary public I guess.

That is FU and you seem to be proud of it, which is just another level of F-U !

I hope the people buying your farm goods get a better product than the one you left behind.

Because very few understand yet everyone has an opinion. Oil change threads are the worst, followed by oil catch cans.

nada....maybe a license plate one day & BA bumpers
I have a 2013 v6 bought brand new in oct 2012 & have performed every oil change myself

    here's the details:
    1. first oil change at 500m
    2. 2nd oil change at 1000m
    3. 3rd oil swap at 1500m
    4. 4th change at 5000m
    5. oil change every 5k miles thereafter
    6. I just did oil change #82....passed 395k recently....pushing to 397k in a few days & closing in on 400k real soon
& yes, its the stock factory motor/tranny

I say the manual is on point with the 5k interval for the gen2's (not sure about a gen3 though)
& a few early changes in initial ownership seems to be a good idea if you plan to keep your taco for many miles/years

You might want to read over your warranty paperwork. You will see that it is every 5,000 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first.

I didn't say anything about the oil change. What I am saying that in order to comply with the Toyota required maintenance schedule / warranty requirements, maintenance must be performed every 6 months or 5,000 miles whichever comes first. Not all of the required 6 month/5000 mile services involve an oil change. Toyota warranty is 10K oil changes under normal driving conditions.

Cut and paste from your provided Toyota link:

    • If at six months you have driven less than 5,000 miles, you should obtain maintenance at six months — don’t wait until 5,000 miles.
