So, my wife and I have seperated, and I am planning a divorce build!! I would like to have a snorkel and I'm not ashamed to say I will be purchasing it for mainly looks alone. My question is regarding driving in heavy rain, or snow...will I have any problems?? I know some of the junk dump trucks I work on every day are equipped with a snow valve, that switches the air intake from outside the hood to under the hood. I am not familiar with the snorkel setups as far as how they are designed, so, sorry if this is a stupid question..LOL:p

I've had my snorkel on my truck for a few years now and have driven in very heavy rain and snow. I was worried about it when i first got the snorkel but checked the air filter during a heavy rain storm and it was bone dry. Definitely worth it.

If your that worried about it like I was at first you can just loosen the pipe clamp that holds the head of the snorkel and turn it around... takes a minute not a big deal though

Thanks guys! Good to know I wasn't the only one worried about it.

The Safari Snorkel design is actually pretty good at how it directs water out of the snorkel than might find it's way in. It's all in the design of the head portion. I've never had a problem with mine in heavy snow/rain.

But the suggestion to turn the head around is a simple way to address it if your worried.

Stupid question. I have the dobinsons and was wondering if turning the snorkel head backwards would cause any other issues. If yes could drilling a couple reasonably sized holes on the back would help or harm more. I'm not talking massive holes or many just enough to allow some airflow or best not to bother.

I don’t see where it would cause any issues. I’d probably skip drilling holes, as others have stated in this thread the head design actually separates water from the air entering the snorkel. I am not familiar with the dobinsons design though. After my install, I checked the air filter after normal and heavy acceleration in a heavy thunderstorm. It was bone dry every time that I checked it, with the hat turned to the front. I leave it alone now, and this subject hasn’t crossed my mind since.

It’s actually still going. It’s come a long way since this thread. One thing that I did learn later on that I wish I had known to begin with, is the safari snorkel is rather restrictive on airflow. I found this to be the case after installing a supercharger, and an air filter restriction gauge. Wide open throttle will pull the restriction gauge into the red over 3000 rpm every single time. I did the deck plate mod, after testing many filters, and even no filter, to see if I could find a difference. No filter at all had the exact same results, but at a higher rpm. The deck plate allows more air in when I’m pulling a trailer and in boost a lot, even though I’ve only gotten out and taken the cap off a few times. The air in the engine compartment is much higher in temperature than the outside snorkel air, so it’s a nasty trade off either way. I ended up getting a front bumper with a winch, rear bumper with a swing out, lockers front and rear, fabricated a gas tank expansion of 14 additional gallons, and a lot more stuff. I’m currently installing an OME suspension kit. I did a lot to my truck to keep my mind occupied. At the time of this post, I was mentally not in a very good place, because of my divorce. I thought at the time nothing could be worse, but time passed and I realized and learned more about myself than I ever could have otherwise. I’m better off now completely, and often joke about my divorce as being one of the worst things to happen to me that I’m thankful actually happened. My quality of life has improved 100%, plus I’m still working on a badass truck! I need to update my progress, as the truck looks way different now. I’ll get around to it one of these days, as I totally do whatever the hell I want to after getting divorced. LOL!

Good to hear man. Its funny how time gives perspective. People would be so much better off if they'd just chill out a bit.

That’s the truth! Everyone says relationships take work, I understand that, or at least I thought I did. I spent a lot of money and time trying to make “her happy” from day one. That ended up just making myself very unhappy, and miserable. Now I only worry about making my daughter and myself happy. I don’t care if I’m single the rest of my life, my happiness will be more important than any woman I’m with...period!
