Years removed from this post, how are everyone's repaired knees doing? I was just diagnosed with a partially torn lateral meniscus on my left side. As an avid adventurer, this will severely cut not only into my fun but also into my paycheck. Is everyone able to hike for miles with a heavy backpack again?

I have had both knees done. I don't hike but I road ride and mountain bike multiple times a week. I get flare ups but nothing a little ice and Aleve can't take care of.

How long was surgery? You get them both done at the same time? How long was recovery? Guessing you're happy you had it done?

I tore my left knee about four years before I tore my right knee. The pain in my left knee was worse than my right before surgery. I would go in for cortisone and it would only give me a week of comfort. That is when I knew it was surgery time.

My right knee pain wasn't as bad. The left knee meniscus used to catch causing allot of pain but with my right knee I never had that issue. Just discomfort and swelling.

Surgery is only a hour to a hour and a half tops and you can walk right away. I scheduled my surgeries on the Friday before thanksgiving week so I didn't have to miss allot of work. If you have a desk job you can go back to work after a long weekend. I am up on my feet all day and I went back to work after a long week off. The first few days are crucial keeping your leg elevated and iced. I was able to start light workouts after two weeks. Your recovering from your knee being cut into and scoped. The meniscus trimming is not a big issue.

Best case scenario would be to have the meniscus repaired but recovery is allot longer and unless you are a professional athlete most doctors will suggest just trim it. The problem with trimming the meniscus is it promotes bone on bone arthritis in the knee joint.

Ive both had mine trimmed and repaired different times. When you get it trimmed they basically just remove the torn section, which leaves you susceptible to arthritis later down the road.

When they repair it they stitch the meniscus back together. The recovery time IIRC is about 3 months on crutches not able to put stress on your leg. Compared to having it trimmed you could walk on it after a week.

Im only 27 but this happened when I was 20 and 21. My knee is fine some discomfort every so often but I ride bicycles/run and hike many miles and it hasn't effected me.

Are you thinking of just not having surgery? If you dont I think there are alternate risks of it causing other damage if stuck in the wrong place over time.

When I'm done it will have a custom fabbed winch bumper and hopefully a Softtopper.
Been there, done that, got the TKR. My repairs did nothing. Getting the new knee was awsome! No more pain after the replacement. I was 46 when they fitted me with plastic and titainiaum. Actually looking forward to having the left knee replaced.

I have heard good things about knee replacement surgery. Hopefully I can put that off for awhile.

Yikes!! I'm terrified of a TKR, but I guess if I don't take care of things now it'll come to that. I work outdoors in adventure scenarios and need all the movement I can get. Trying to get an appt with an ortho right now, but the general doc suggested surgery. Luckily only a partial tear. Thanks for the info guys - you're arming me with questions to ask the doctor when we meet.

My SO hurt her knee on the truck one day as she turned too sharp. She was a pretty avid softball player and very good, but the injury put her out. Doctor told her she tore her meniscus. She spent about a month or two doing what the doctor recommended but never felt any better, then went to a specialist in Houston and turns out it was a different part of her knee and is now doing better... So I really recommend anyone to go to a specialist!
