I'm sure that's the case. But the thing with Toyotas is that working on them feels intuitive. While I am DiYer for small to moderate projects, I do get frustrated really easily. I can follow instructions but am not good at figuring out things once I hit a snag.

Most of the feedback I've gotten has been that working on VW is rarely a quick in and out process.

Are you referring to the rust issues? IIRC Tacomas had this issue, recalled actually right?

I mean that is a long term problem. The issues I'm referring to that GM customers are having is within the first year or two of ownership. And they go beyond a specific faulty part/issue. It's encompasses everything.

never noticed, or maybe we just never had to work on anything that used triple square, everything was mostly allen and torx.

Toyota has had diesel in the US for quite a while. They're just in their commercial line of trucks, Hino's. They also make suspension components for the Tacoma in the Hino manufacturing plant in Arkansas.

All im saying is every company has their issues, some worse then others obviously, I also know a few people with gm products that have had a good amount of trouble free miles put on them, maybe they just got lucky lol?

So it's a percentage game. I would love to get a Cruze diesel. But I just can't risk getting it and than having unexpected expenses to cover. It's a luxury to take that risk. Most people don't have it which is why Camry and Corolla have the market shares that they do.

It's frustrating really. There are great things about GM products. Some have are fun to drive, great features, etc. But that build man...just can't trust it if you don't have deep pockets.

Is there any RnD going into putting a diesel into consumer Toyota vehicles?

The calibers and the alternator for sure use triple square.

It wasn't a diesel, but we just got rid of my wife's Cruze after the 3rd transmission problem (in < 3 years). Warranty was set to expire later this year and we didn't want to deal with that. It was a better cost based choice to move on. It was not replaced with another Chevy...

My father-in-law also has a Cruze and has had it in the shop multiple times for transmission and AC problems.

And a co-worker and my previous boss both had the Cruze, also both with transmission problems, but I don't know specifics on those 2.

to be fair I don't think gm cars are that great to start with, I've never sat in a gm made car or suv and thought wow this is nice, other than a zl1 Camaro thats covered in head to toe with alecantra leather and has every feature you would get in a caddy, but saying that every Toyota on the market is still using tech from the early 2000s. I guess its a trade off for having the reliability. Shit i just bought a 02 lexus that has more features than most new Toyotas. maybe they do that on purpose so you will dish out the money for a lexus nx over a rav4

Not in the US. They’ve even stated there won’t be a diesel. That may change at some point but I seriously doubt it.

If they did you could buy a 3/4 ton for the price of it.

I heard a good summary of German engineering.

"Why use 2 parts when you can use 6?"

I rented a Cruze and a Corolla back to back. If you told me the Cruze was a Chinese knock off that costs one third as much, I'd believe it.

As European vehicles go, VW is a stellar example of top European reliability. Compare a VW to a Fiat, Citroen, Renault, or Peugeot - as crappy as VW is, it is far superior to those others. That's why you don't even see them on this side of the big pond.

Mk7 Golf TDi owner here, ask away.

People love to throw shade at VW for check engine lights, but in the 36k I've had my car it's been less problematic than my first gen was.

Oh, and thanks to the extended emissions warranty everything has been free to fix.
