    I second this sentiment!!

My 2013 Taco is the /newest/ car at my house and I am not sure how happy I would be with a 3rd gen+ or other newer car due to the expanded role of the ECU.

Glad OP got it sorted before shelling out a pile of $$ and that this thread seems to have helped -

Just for clarity. You are 100% good to go and everything is feeling fine? Driving, reversing, and indications?

    Just curious.

Never mind. I missed this post:

That is freaking epic though. Going from a toasted AT to just a fuse. Go, TW!

I was helping a person diagnose some truly weird shit on his used 2019. It wouldn't even run, had all this weird flashing on the shift indicator, and one of the relays under the hood was buzzing like crazy. There were a bunch of light mods that he tore out in hope that it would help. While doing the removal, he noticed that the ground point on the AT was completely loose. Tightened that up and was 100% solid. His feeling was that it was loose from the original assembly.

Anything after basically 2000 is too damn complex. Yes, though. The 2nd Gen has some great and easy mods with jumper wires.

Still though, I say the same thing when comparing my 3rd Gen to my wife's Forester. Way too many gizmos. Regardless, I can still do all regular maintenance, which is hopefully all that it needs.

It's all relative, and we're all screwed. Because even though Toyotas last a damn long time, including 3rd Gens, they don't last forever.

I wanted a pre/2009 Tacoma with the manual transfer case and locking hubs - but alas, shopping for a used V6/AC/MT/4wd is no easy task so I took the first good one I found - took me 9 months

Right now I am looking for an early 2000 Honda - I have never owned an AT and don't want one, but MT are slowly dying out so I'll be screwed [and not in a good way] at some point..

I was doing the same in 2017. Was riding bikes for over a decade before that and had to let my winter machine, a sidecar bike, go because it wasn't reliable to daily. The 2nd Gens that I test drove with over 140k were great, just too damn expensive. The 3rd Gen has been great and as close to that sidecar as I could get to DD and satisfy the offroad bug.

I'd like to get a 2nd Gen Miata someday, but the prices for those are going through the roof also.

You're telling me that this whole problem with your transmission was because of a lamp fuse?

My guess is because that fuse was broken the computer relied on that to help see that it was in reverse. Guessing it didnt know what gear it was in at all, so it was maybe in reverse physically (shifter)then thinking it was (computer) in drive making it go crazy. Just a guess though. Trying to engage reverse and drive at the same time. Hence maybe the squealing i got on the tires

Nah! They would have swapped the fuse and billed for an entire trans.

I always joke with my wife when we drive her 2014 Rav4 somewhere and she asks "what's the outside temp?" (which her vehicle displays), I read it and say "wow my truck doesn't have this fancy shit"

Sounds about right. Same thing as where people can't get out of Park when a taillight blows.
