you should inspect the linkage to make sure nothing is bent.

Yes, now im thinking it could even be a coincidence that i happened to put it into reverse and some sensor, wire, computer might have just gave out. It could be. I have no idea. Could be wrong

A double fault seems pretty unlikely. Although, I have had them on other vehicles in the past.

Original back in, or a new one? There is some adjustment on slotted holes of the range sensor that must be correct.

Have you checked fuses? I can’t remember if the back-up fuse is the only source to the range sensor, or if there is another. Maybe someone can post a wiring diagram. Or turn the key on, and test all fuses in both fuse boxes (under hood and in dash left side) with a test light using this method:

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ksrsXwwukFc

Have you checked if the reverse lights are working when in reverse?

You know what I forgot to mention that. When i put it in reverse the reverse lights will light up for a few seconds then shut off. This makes me think that something internally in the transmission is not wrong because why would all these other little electrical gremlins exist all of a sudden. But i really dont know

this guy had the same issue and it ended up being a fuse for the backup lights i think

    https://www.tundratalk.net/threads/p0705-transmission-range-sensor-malfunction-code.233177/

"Thought I would write that in case anyone else comes up with that code. Check to make sure anything connected to your reverse lights and if you have a camera (mine is on the rear view mirror) make sure it is working. They all get signals from the park/neutral switch. More than likely the fuse is blown."

the fuse is located in the cab by your feet.

Well shit that makes sense. Kind of. If the fuse was blown obviously there would be no power from that point fwd. But it does provide a direction to start as that seems to feed both shift switches

Reminds me of the old Click and Clack joke about rebuilt starters (basically saying they suck) back in the day. They take 500 boneyard starters and test them once, 250 work and get tagged/sold as rebuilt.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I’d take the center console out to make sure the wiring to the shifter is in good shape

That tidbit makes things even more puzzling because they work and then don’t, but a piece of the puzzle for sure. Check if there is a circuit breaker instead of a fuse in the back-up slot.

It may well be a corroded connector or wire too.

100% the electrical fault needs to be fixed here first. It may well be the only issue. Your transmission symptoms are consistent with what happens when an electronically controlled transmission is operating in fail-safe mode as only a hydraulic / mechanical transmission.

It’s the Pepsi Syndrome! When you slammed into reverse, your drink sloshed out from your cup holder and spilled into your shift mechanism electronics and shorted it out.

Go to You Tube for Pepsi Syndrome if you need a laugh at this point.

How do you check the fuses under the dash?

there should be a panel near your left foot. open it up and use a flashlight to see if all the metal connections in the fuses are still intact. i'd pull out the backup fuse and inspect it. there's usually a fuse puller connected to the panel (i know there is one in the engine bay panel)

    https://torquetrip.com/how-to-check-car-fuses/

there's also some in the engine bay near your battery.

They are above the parking brake pedal.

The test light method I posted before still works well, ground clip to bare metal under the dash, and key on.

Service manual calls for inspection of the floor switch, park/neutral switch and the harness. May need to replace some parts, including ECM.
    Take it to the dealer..
