not Scandinavian, but Darkest Hour is heavily influenced by a lot of those bands.

Does anyone use metal-tracker.com for music? I browse it and download stuff randomly then buy the discography on Bandcamp if I like it.

That’s the 1st I’ve heard of that, I just type in name of band and ask if anyone sounds like that.

It allows browsing by some pretty specific, niche genres. It's kind of like asking who sounds like what. If you're into *avant-garde black doom*, you can search whoever else is listed as that genre.

I just looked and had no idea there are that many genres. When I started listening to metal . It was just rock in roll , hard rock, heavy metal and speed metal. None of the other stuff

There are some pretty lengthy arguments about all the various sub-genres of metal also, and what defines each one lol

I’ve got to where I read reviews on the site MetalSucks.com . And every few days read Blabbermouth to see what’s going on. Just read the original bassist for Anthrax on fistful of metal album is playing some South American shows with them and hasn’t played with them in over 40 years . Besides playing with them in SOD Stormtroopers of Death .

Depends on the album re Arch Enemy. General answer is post Angela I'd consider melodic, which I expected given Alissa's overall body of work. Was lucky to see Angela live on the Khaos Legions tour.

Dan Lilker..mmmm. Saw him with Nuclear Assault a while back.

Anthrax must be seen live at least once.

    Hmmm, Boston huh

Yup yup. Gang Green..Godsmack..Rob Zombie..Powerman 5000..so much good shit here.

I'm still almost always using CDs. Or my USB with my rare stuff..which is the case now since my truck is in the body shop (ironically after a metal show) and the 22 Tacoma Off Road I'm renting doesn't have a CD player...

I had cds as a kid but by 2010 or so (i was 14) i had switched to torrents and then streaming. Nowadays im collecting cds, tapes, and records because I fell in love with actually owning the physical media. That way when spotify dies from being completely unprofitable I can still listen to music

Man. Torrents. I had a 500gb external hard drive in highschool that was completely full with music downloads. That thing got passed around like a beach ball at a Nickelback concert.

i turned 11 in 2007 and lets just say if the internet providers knew how to catch people back then my parents would have been screwed. I was downloading every copyright protected thing i could. Got too broke for internet and my brother and I would sit behind the library all night and torrent using the free wifi and charge our laptops with the outdoor plugs LOL

I refuse to pay for streaming (audio or video) because I'm cheap, plus as you said I've always been one to open the box, read the liner stuff, etc etc.

I’m not into reading up on artist news/recommendations, but I’ve tried metalsucks in the past. Artist suggestions are the one thing that “the algorithm” is actually good for. With zero effort I’ve broadened the scope of artists I’m aware of and given artists I thought I didn’t like, a fair shake.
There’s way too many new artists from the past two decades for me to try and keep up with, so I let the robots do the work for me.
Portrayal of guilt, kaonashi, bosse-de-nage, VCTMS, I’m letting unseen forces take the wheel, igorrr, the body, coarse, meth., habak, no cure; are all in heavy rotation at the moment and I wouldn't have ever found them on my own.
Liturgy, dystopia, full of hell, deafheaven, amenra; I never would have listened to objectively if they hadn’t popped up randomly, re-sparking my interest.
Don’t get me wrong I love the tactile feel of my physical media, but I definitely don’t miss juggling discs on the road.
Anymore I buy merch to support the bands I truly love as they get more of the profit than they do from album sales.
Edit to add; I don’t mean to say that streaming can or should replace anything. Just that it is useful for finding new music
