I bought a brand new '17 Tacoma and the first weekend I detailed it. While wiping the wax off, I noticed pieces of what looks to be machining metal, metal shavings or pieces under the clear coat. There were 3 noticeable ones on the roof and one in the rear passenger door. There was also an opened bubble in the paint on the bottom corner of the driver's door.
The dealership said to take it to their collision center to have it looked at. They said they took varying grades of clay bar to it and, yes, they got two visible pieces out, but the other was big enough that it's basically just a sanded down metal piece. I'm sure all of that was at the expense of my clear coat.
2 months later I notice several rust spots in the door jam in line where the weather stripping touches the paint.
I took it to another dealer closer to me and they got approval from toyota to paint the hood, door, and door jam.
Has anyone else had any issues like this with the paint on their new truck, and if so, how was it handled?
I'm not ok with having my 3 month old truck painted.
    Thanks for any feedback.

@Joe23 had a similar problem, I think. Hope you get this rectified, and welcome to TW.

Hmmm. Almost looks more like rail dust to me. Hit it with a medium clay bar and see if that removes it.

If it was from my own doing, I wouldn't be bothered by it either. But it seems like a manufacturing defect.

I don't have the shavings but I had some bumps like shit under the paint. They buffed out though. Lol.

How does rail dust get beneath the clear coat?

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure quick sand is a single stage paint IE no clear just like super white.

Pretty sure there was a thread on here a while ago and Toyota claimed that all their paint on the Tacoma's is a base and clear.

Wow that's knarly. Built in Mexico I assume. I believe you have a 5 year warranty on paint.

Had a tad of fall-out aka rail- dust on my rear passenger side door sill , and let the dealer deal with it . I forget the procedure they explained to me but if memory serves me right, I believe they just buffed it out and is all good now!

Glad to help but its not exactly from the rails in all cases. There are fine metal particles in everyday air, notorious in big cities, parking structures, and probably around heavy industries coming from sources like brake pads or particulates from some machining process. Which is why you often see fine dust on cars left in otherwise clean parking garages for a few weeks. Anyways, they get stuck in paint and after some overnight misting/condensation, you now have an ugly iron-based pimple on your paint. Only thing I can think of to do is keep up with your car washes, wax often, and make sure to keep the dust away. And avoid parking next to train tracks.

I had what looked to be tiny flecks of orange in the paint on my silver 2001 Taco. They weren't bumped up like a particle that had landed on the truck during the painting process. Just rust colored specks the size of a pin head. I was worried about the spots getting bigger, but after 7 years of ownership they never changed.
