No judgment here, happy to help.
Here's a video on a nice trick for locating noises. The jug is a nice touch but not necessary, just hold the handle close to your ear.

Any update on this? My 2.7 has the same issue, although completely at random it seems. Would love to know what it was.

    Thanks

Honestly no, I have done everything to shaking almost all parts of my truck, to fixing any loose heat shield, to even taking valve covers off and replacing plugs and I have still found nothing. It is driving me mad.

Sorry to bump an old thread again, but I feel like I have to come clean.

So today I found out what the noise was...

I figured I would wait to see if Toyota replacing my frame would fix the problem, maybe they would take apart or find what was loose and when they re-assembled my truck that somehow it would get fixed. It didn't. After I got my truck back the noise was worse.

So after work today and hearing it the whole ride home Jersey to Pennsylvanian. I decided to take a look under the truck again. At that point I said fuck it, my other cat clam heat shield was already gone since I bought the truck so I figured id just pull the other one off. and what do I find....the damn metal strap was rusted thru and broken...I removed the clam and drove around and the noise is gone..

to everyone that said it was my heat shield....you where right...I am a ashamed Tacoma owner tonight :(:rain:

Might be dumb but I had a similar rattle that ended up being rocks in the cats heat shield...

Speaking of the cat heat shield, I drove over a plastic grocery bag, and it got stuck to my cat. I smelled burning plastic for at least 3 months.
