No you dingus, dirty injectors = rough running = vibration = rocks rattling in heat shield

You wanna see what I mean go unplug a coil or injector and drive around you'll find it doesn't feel bad when off the throttle but on the gas it feels like you're re entering the atmosphere

Idk maybe just the vibrations from acceleration, but when I finally found and removed them it solved the problem

I am glad to hear you found your rattle. I removed my Y pipe recently and found that cat clam shield to be totally unserviceable. The strap and the bolts were rusted beyond any sort of repair and would not budge no matter what. I said to hell with it all and just cut it off and run without that shield now. Considering it's function, the hardware and the straps which hold that shield in place are made of cheap garbage.

It takes a good man to give updates. Usually threads like this when the guy found the problem, 1. He doesnt give an update which causes other people looking for answers to find a dead end. 2. The issue was something suggested by someone else in the thread which was put off. Which makes op not come clean and leaving the thread dead.

Now i have to look at my clam shell. Thx for the update.

I have been experiencing the same thing for months now. (Rattling noise like gravel/nails in a tin can) It’s extremely irritating, good news is that it was an easy fix! Keep an eye out for the bolts by the heat guard by the exhaust. I found two bolts that were so lose I could tighten it with my fingers. THE WASHERS were actually the cause of the rattling. Once located and tightened, the noise stopped. Hope this helps!

I’m having the same exact problem. Ever find out what was the cause ? I’m also supercharged, 7th injector, and get the sound when I gouge on it in a higher gear at lower rpm soon as it gets to a higher rpms the sound goes away.

Been battling this for 6+ months on my 2012 and had the same issue on my 2005 Taco before I sold it.

After so many engine-related efforts chasing it, I finally pulled the cat heat shield off and found it to be the cause of my “rattle” as well.

Hey OP @Fatmonk8 did you ever solve this? Sorry to post on an old thread but I have the exact same issue on my 2013 prerunner (v6 automatic) and wanna try to figure it out myself before taking it for service. It’s around 15-20 rpm’s and sounds like hardware rattling in a can or something. Basically you’re exact description. Thanks in advance

Just beware it may be something more expensive. I have a car that I would hear rattling, especially when I revved it up and let off. It turned out to be the components in the catalytic converter had started to crumble. The back section was still in tack, holding the loose pieces inside. Guess I can be thankful they didn't migrate down into my muffler.

One expensive catalytic converter later, the problem was fixed.

Old thread but my truck (2015 taco w/ 80K miles) has been making a funny sound only when accelerating and under 40mph. Been going on for about 2 months. I wouldn't say mine sounds like a rattle or metallic like people describe with the loose heat shields. Mine sounds garbled, almost like a boat engine under water sound if that makes sense at all? As I accelerate its like I can hear the normal engine sound but it's got like a repetitive bubbly waaahhhh tune to it. As soon as I let off the gas it stops. Over 40mph it goes away completely and sounds normal. Cold or hot it will do it on command as soon as I press the gas, and stop as soon as I left off. Any thoughts? My wife and I have been having to switch cars frequently transporting kids and what not so I forget to check it out while I'm driving hers, until I get back in the truck and notice it again.

Doesn't make the sound in neutral sitting in the driveway pressing on the gas. When it happens it feels like I hear it towards the engine bay a little to the right as I'm sitting in the drivers side.

I'm having the same exact noise, u described it well, 2020 tacoma, 17k miles first owner, oil change on times. What that can be? Everyone including dealers can't give me an answer, some people say that engine due high pressure in summer requires 93 gas. Any new ideas are welcome

Mine is doing this! Started a few months ago and was barely noticeable. Happened mostly when starting from a stop. I thought one of the kids put rocks or nuts in a cup holder, but the nose was coming from the front drivers side, maybe just inside the engine bay.

It's been getting worse - lost and starting to make the noise whenever I accelerate.

I'll have to try the high test and spark plugs.

Oh I also have a pedal commander, maybe I'll try turning it off or removing it as well.

Mine does the same thing. When I hit exactly 1850 RPM under load I get a metallic rattlecan sound. It's not a knock or a ping. it drives me nuts.

Fixed mine this weekend. It was the driver's side heat shield.
