Man a lot of you guys get all worried for nothing... My brand new truck does this, it's obvious the dipstick is hard to push in and scrapes the tube.

I always go to the internet and ask complete strangers instead of the dealer. The internet always has more certified techs in every aspect you can trust.

If the motor blows blue and knocks in 10,000k just go back to the internet and to have them cover the cost.

Cover your ass and and go to a dealer right away. If they won’t physically do anything to figure out the shavings at least have them document it for you (maybe with a Print Screen for your records too)
Current engine manufacturing isn’t like the old days where you’d need to do an oil change after 500miles or so because of shavings. These days cleaning and machining tolerances are very precise and there’s rarely enough swarf metal from break in floating around to see it on your dipstick. I could be wrong but i’d say something isn’t right.
Getting the oil and shavings tested at a lab is a great idea too.
Also, I don’t know what everyone else’s dipsticks look like, but there’s no way mine is sharp enough to shave metal from the inside of a metal tube.

100% agree. It would also be a design failure to have dipsticks manufactured with a metal that was that much harder (hardness scale) than the metal tubing it not only rested in, but made contact with when removed and reinserted.

I dont think it's the tube that is being shaved, it's the dipstick itself, further inspection I can see and feel where the dipstick is being shaved down from rubbing against the tube when I insert it in. Maybe I got a bunk dipstick?

Interesting,,,, considering the dip stick is made from spring steal and the tube is made from mild steal.

Simple to miss but is it possible OP needs to turn the dipstick to a angle matching the bending of the tube so it goes in and down easier ? Being off even 5 degrees makes it much harder to do and would scrape and bind on the way down and out . @Fearthisbeard

I wouldn't care if the shavings were coming from my dipstick or anything else. I'd be pissed if it were from inserting and removing the dipstick. You sure as hell don't want your dipstick inserting metal shavings into the sump since you don't want any metal floating around there in the first place.

I've owned many cars over the years and have never seen shavings like that. That includes 3 Taco's and a 1st gen. I don't think it's normal at all.

Edit - Don't get me wrong, you do end up with some small bits of metal from the break in, but those get caught in the filter or by the magnetic drain plug. The dipstick providing more, and that size? No, that should not happen IMO.

I just checked mine and no metal shavings and the oil is shiny clean after 4676 miles. I did just purchase oil from the dealer and will drain and fill just for good measure. I bought 7 quarts for about $54 and the filter element for $5.50. I am going to leave the filter and let them change that at 10k miles since the oil is so clean and no metal shavings on dipstick.

You should change the filter with the oil. Normally if shavings are present, they will be in the filter and/or on the magnetic drain plug. Stuff on the dipstick is not normal at all.

Got lipstick on my dip stick but never metal shavings :bananadance:...
    Crap, what forum is this?

I changed my first oil at 5000 and had some metal in the pleats of the filter unit and some at the bottom of the cartridge housing. Washed the housing with garden hose, gas and garden hose again till like new clean.
For oil I have used Amsoil SS 5W-30 and replaced the oil drain plug with one that has a magnet in it. For second oil change I used the same oil type and did not find any metal particles in the filter but the magnet has a few (5-6) super tiny shinning things. I am at 186XX now and soon to change my oil and also to install the Baxter oil spin-on adapter.
Also my oil-catch-can has oil in it but is normal dark.

    :rofl::rofl:

If you are going to do it in the future, it might save you a step or two. A shot of brake cleaner or toss some kerosene in a quality spray bottle instead of using water?

They probably would change it for free but count it as your 10k mile oil change.

$200.00? Really? That's almost 4 oil changes or 40K miles, not to mention the additional cost of the filter & oil. My '17 Limited is still under warranty so I haven't spent much time at all under it looking at things. After 36K miles, I'll be all over (or under) it. Is the cartridge that much of a PITA to deal with?
My '07 was so simple. 15 minutes total for an oil change and most of that time was looking for a church key! Please lemme' know.

Ummm, you're still buying oil, so about 50 changes?

Nah. Cartridges are great. I prefer them over spin ons. You get an easy view of the media and just a cartridge to toss instead of a canister that may or may not get recycled.

I have had the Baxter adapter now for two oil changes. Takes 1/2 the time and well worth the $200 in my opinion. I buy WIX 51348 filters which have much more filter area than the cartridge. Each to his own but spin-on is for sure a lot easier to deal with. I really don't give a damn about recycling!
