Update: Got the dealer to change the oil, inspect the filter, etc. They found no metal shavings. I have the old filter and can’t find any shavings on the filter. I picked through the filter piece by piece and only found a few pieces of trash down in the creases of the filter (pic 1), which none of look like the shavings I found on the dip stick (pic 2). When I first posted about the problem, there were more shavings, now not so much. There were no shavings on the stick this morning pre-oil change, now post-oil change I can see a few shavings. Leads me to believe the stick is scraping the tube.

Agreed. I saw these threads but both refer to trucks with less than 10k miles. I was/am still worried since mine has 71k. I’m probably going to do an oil analysis when I get a few miles on the oil. Maybe it’s just the tube and metal isn’t circulating.

Yeah, if anyone else has had the same shavings and it worked out ok for them then obviously you should ignore it.

Not like years of documentation about how it’s been a disaster across multiple platforms should weigh in at all.

    The board has spoken

When a vehicle is brand new and the engine is being broken in then sure, expect to see a bit of metal. I wouldn’t be so blasé at 70,000

In a 911 it would be a sign of pending failure of the IMS...

What’s your oil change interval mileage & date?

only time I saw metal shavings was when I was pushing 9k miles on 0w20 synthetic but was 18 months overdue. 20k miles layer it started burning oil like a mf. This was on a Prius from years ago. Since then I change my oil religiously.

Oil change every 6-8k miles. 3-5 months between oil changes. I use the truck for work and am on the road a lot.

Your engine is fine. Metal particles from bearings in a motor will be much finer than that.

It's your oil dip stick scraping metal off the tube, mine does the same thing when you push it in to fast.

The cure? Slow down dipping your stick in and out. That's what she said.

Have you tried a dipstick with less girth and length?

Does it specify that it has to be done by a Toyota dealer? Or that it has to be done by a professional shop rather than done by the owner? If not then you create a logbook and you should be good although it always helps to have photos, receipts for the consumables, notarized affidavit from a witness, and so on.

Has anyone confirmed what the deal is with this issue I have a 2018 Tacoma SR5 with the same issue right now took it to the dealer and they say it’s fine. Is it the metal from the tube and dipstick rubbing or is it something to be concerned about

Never saw a hint of metal in my oil when I did my 1st 10k oil change last fall. Even cut open the filter, and it was spotless. Even the oil itself still appeared cleaner than most I've seen with that many miles.....not black as tar in my brothers gm 4.3 we changed at 5k miles.

Get a file or sharpening stone and dress the the dipstick edges.

I had a drill press that was chewing up belts. I saw that some of the pulley grooves were bent. Probably from sitting in a production bin with other pulleys thrown on top. I took a file and bent them back and filed them smooth. No more chewed belts and smooth, quiet operation.

Just do it. I had shavings at 400 miles. I dressed the dipstick because the sound it made coming out was not nice. Maybe it wasn’t the dipstick…but it does sound better now.

If I remember correctly, it was the tip of the dipstick that was ground roughly. But my guess is that the debris is in the dipstick tube and not in your pan. This would be why each time you check, there’s less debris.

    These are just my guesses.
