I know there were issues with leaf springs on pre-18 models, but my 2018 DCLB Off road has soft metallic grinding noise that’s only noticeable when rear window is down.

    Anybody heard of similar?

I have a grinding noise when the rear window is open too. I don't know if it's the same as yours, but it is there.
This won't help you any, but I took it in to the dealership and they said "it's just tire noise and wind noise from the softopper." Glad you posted, now I see I'm not alone on this and we can see where it goes from here.

YES!!! It starts at about 10 mph for me. I spent a weekend trying to track it down. I believe its the drum brake on the passenger side.(for me) I thought it was just the pads rubbing but adjusted them and the emergency brake. The noise is still there. I've tried cleaning everything to next step is just to replace the rear breaks. I've gone 41k miles and haven't had any issues with the noise..its just really annoying. All of the brake pads are wearing evenly to.

If you put the rear end on jack stands and spin the tires by hand you should hear it. (I'm positive its not coming from my rear diff. That was the first thing I went to.)

The noise I have is constant once you get above 10 mph.

There have been reports of brake drums being out of round from the factory and replaced under warranty.

Because they are out of round they don't engage with the shoes properly, and no amount of adjusting can fix that.

Is the noise dependent on the engine/road speed? Chirping is a classic sign of u-joints going bad.

    No, constant noise over 10mph.

Doesn’t matter if you’re accel or decelerating. Don’t recall tapping brakes to disqualify out of round drums.

Bone stock truck, less a topper, with. 2500 miles.

For me its road speed. When I jacked up the truck and spun the back tires as fast as I could. I can get the noise to show up. (very soft metallic sound.)

    Didnt know that. Thanks.

I had exactly this sound. Sort of a metal on metal scraping/whining type noise. It was especially noticeable with the rear window down. It also changed with speed. New rear diff (maybe rear diff hangar) coming from Toyota. Warrantied, no questions asked. They must know it's an issue.

Guess I’m glad not to be the only one. Did this resolve the problem or is it pending?

Confirmed, it’s not related to brakes or drums out of round. Makes the same noise with brakes engaged or not.

Yes, when the rear window is open sounds like light brake grinding or key being pulled 20 feet behind you but constant tone no jingle. Not brakes.

Did you ever get this solved? The constant sound of crickets or chain dragging makes me nuts when driving. Imagine it’s worse for me with a topper that creates an echo chamber vs just hearing wind without.

Dealer said it’s normal, basically piss off, I've just not had time to tear into it or throw a fit.

Finally just got it fixed, took Toyota weeks to get the leaf spring pads, and a week or so for the diff to come in.
