Went in for this problem last week after due the 30k differential oil change. Front diff oil came out dirty, transfer case oil dirty, rear diff was clean and had a good bit of shavings. I think some put in heavier gear oil to hide the noise. Took the truck in and ended up with a new differential a week later. 200 miles later the noise is came back. Now with 400 or so miles I'm taking it back in. They need to compare it to another truck of similar age and mileage. But that soft metal grinding noise can't be normal. I thought it was brakes and ended up with a new rear diff. Over the phone this time the dealer tried to make to tell me this noise is normal.

I have the same issue soft grinding noise with back glass open. Anyone get it fixed without plug and play method that most dealerships do.

Sadly no. They couldn’t replicate issue at 10k 20k or 30k. As I’m nearing warranty expiration I’m now pushing. was in yesterday and will go back in this week to further troubleshoot. But honestly 99.9% of all dealer mechanics are morons with less mechanical aptitude than my wife’s retarded cousin. They just plug in the computer and attempt to follow the prompts. their goal is to close tickets and pass buck...not fix anything.

i don’t expect it will get resolved and I’ll sell truck around 100-150k, hopefully before it fails. If not, I’ll grab a JY housing, bolt up and move on.

Should also qualify that I long since gave up on folks doing what’s right or even just their jobs.

Ok I know some really good mechanics. I’m going to find what the noise comes from and go from there. I will repost soon.

That noise is your fuel pump. It’s normal.

i’ve noticed a metal noise also it’s constant doesn’t disappear when braking. Dealer said “could not replicate”. i would think if it fuel pump you would hear it at a stop. my noise is only when moving and it’s constant.

I also had the exact same noise from my 17 TRD Pro. Brought it in multiple times without any luck. Finally got the Toyota Field tech guy involved. They analyzed everything and finally agreed it was coming from the rear diff. They replaced the rear diff & noise went away......for about 10k miles & then started to come back. A few thousand miles later my speed sensor went out during a terrible snow storm with my kids in the truck. I lost traction control, abs, couldn’t switch to 4x4 or anything. Needless to say I traded it in the next day. I miss my truck but I just didn’t have the time to deal with all the issues.

Yes. The noisy crickets sound you hear with the back glass or rear windows open is your in tank fuel pump echoing between the gap of the cab and bed. But I mean, you guys can chase it all you want. I don’t really care lol.

Pretty sure fuel pump always pumps when engine is running...even when truck is parked.

Yep. I’ve heard people say they’re pretty sure of a lot of things. I’ll still charge them to look at it. Oh well lol

I can hear fuel pump running while truck is in park . Yes I am under the truck listening. I could see where the sound could go right up to the back window. It does sound like a cheap Motor running .

Sorry I do this when texting to multiple text. Lol . Wonder if sea foam or additive would quiet it a little. Just asking I’m not a mechanic. Or I can get louder tires or just keep my back glass shut.

I know my dealer checked everything...brakes, hubs, my bed cover, tires, etc....they finally all agreed it was the diff & noise went away after the repair. My grinding noise was specifically every time vehicle went over 10-15mph & continued at all times until speeds dropped below 10mph. ‍♂️

Also...grinding noise was in addition to the howling/whining noise above 55mph. Prior to replacing the differential I had the TSB with leaf replacements with no improvement. I also had a leaking diff but that was a completely different issue. Either way...All noises went away after they replaced the differential. Unfortunately they all began to come back after approx 10k miles after repair.

Ok I’m still not a mechanic., but lifted rear of the truck on jack stands and put it in drive and I’m 90% sure it’s in the diff. It starts at 20 mph . I didn’t get to involved. Kinda nervous laying under the truck with my wife behind the wheel. It’s hard to tell with all the other noises but leaning toward rear end. Plus driving down the road I cut off truck and could still hear it so that ruled out fuel pump. But still hard to here with all the beeping. Now it’s time for a professional. I know some might not care lol as someone said earlier. But I do it’s a 40,000 dollar truck .

Nice. I previously shut off the truck in neutral at 40 mph (as some of the 99% are certain it’s the fuel pump). Easy to rule out for anybody who’s ever worked on an actual car.

Not sure I’d have the guts to get under the truck at 20 but nice find.

I’d agree it’s in the diff.

    Update for anybody who cares.

Local Toyota shop manager hears the noise and wants it back again (#4 if counting).

Truck has to go back anyway as they ‘fixed’ the factory remote tailgate lock by reversing polarity. Now it’s locked when truck is unlocked and the opposite. That is surprisingly awkward. But they’re on it?
