Worked on brake drums . Noise got louder. I’m starting to think it’s in the drums. I’m thinking of having my trucked regeared and new axles , new drums, etc. if noise is still there after that ! Dynamite!!!!!!!

Well I took drums off to inspect and while I had off I noticed a couple rubbing spots on the backing plate. But when I put them back on it seemed louder. I also cleaned while I had the off. Brakes were wore more than I thought they would be. @ 30k. So when I rotate wheels I can hear and feel a drag at top on bother sides.

Ok so jack the truck up again. It’s definitely in the rear diff. I’m going to just add thicker diff oil . Until I get it regeared with 4.88 gears from nitro gear. From searching about this truck. It’s geared with 3.91 gears and with over drive it’s only gear to 2. Something I don’t remember. It’s not the transmission it’s gear wrong from factory. It’s geared for low rpm, not for what it needs. Google it. Nitro 4.88 or 5.29 gears makes sense watch it on you tube nitro or Tacoma beast.

Bumping this old thread. Have this exact noise on my 2021. Haven't had time to take to the dealer yet, but I am still under warranty so I plan to.

Any other experiences/insight with this issue?

I think my truck is having this issue. When I took mine in for 20k service, I told dealer that my front suspension was very squeaky, like when maneuvering in parking lots and such. They replaced the coil springs and coil hats under warranty (unrelated issue).

Now I have noticed this same metallic grinding noise. Not super loud, but def noticeable with radio off and back glass open. With front windows down its too loud to hear the noise. Man this sucks. And from the other posts it sounds like a new diff may not fix it. I kinda miss my old second gen rn.
