I don't know how many people out there knew who Michael Stanley was and how much of an impact he made on music here in North East Ohio but for people from here he was a amazing talent and will be sadly missed. He had countless hits but never left his home in Cleveland. He was true to our area and even after the Michael Stanly Band had broken up he still would do concerts in the area and he was also a DJ and hosted some of our local shows on TV. I was listening to him back in the late 70s when I just got out of high school. Still play the Stage Pass CD from time to time. He died yesterday at 72 from cancer.

The man had one hell of a voice. For those who may not recognize the name, look it up. You have heard him......

Growing up in Pittsburgh in the 1960s, 70 and early 80s, we had a real rivalry with Cleveland, as both cities and regions had a very similar cultural and economic background. The local rock station, WDVE, would play Michael Stanley songs because they were good and because there was a respect between the two regions even if it was heated at times. Here's to Michael and all those who worked and played hard from both Cleveland and Pittsburgh in the old days.

Those were the good days of the station, irreverent and funny comedy, with a good dose of Pittsburghese.

Indeed, it was almost fun back then to be at work in the mornings and listen to those guys.

So I talk to the night, I head for the light, try and hold it on the road... Thank God for the man who put the white lines on the highway...

They were so close to making it big nationally in the 70s and 80sand couldn't quite get over the hump.

Good, solid, midwestern rock with thoughtful lyrics.

I graduated from the same high school, but about 25 years later.

Michael Stanley was compared to Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and John Mellancamp for his loyal hometown following. The guy outsold Led Zeppelin and every other major act coming to North East Ohio to play at places like the old Richfield Coliseum and Blossom Music Center. Even years later he still packed them in with his fan base being 50-60-70 year old's out there jumping around and singing along like they were 20 years old again.
To me my favorite song by the Michael Stanley Band was "Lover". RIP

DVE was mentioned earlier. I am a refuge from the Ohio Valley and remember listening to that station when I was still in Wheeling. Cleveland's version of that was the old WMMS / The Buzzard.
Good times when music was album oriented and not this canned crap you here today. You can change the station but its still the same song sometimes.

I have seen MSB probably 8 times. The last time was at the Civic Theater in Akron. From the front row Theater in the 80s to now, he never disappointed. He will be missed

Damn I read this post and now I have to dig out my Michael Stanley Stage Pass CD again. Keep wanting to hear "Waste a little time on me". Anyone who has never heard of Michael Stanley needs to look up some of his music and check it out.
