Some of the trails we used are snowmobile routs now. There are still plenty of forest / seasonal roads that I know well. We go for winter trail rides as long as its not too deep.

When does everyone switch to 4x4 when on the hwy Heavy snow ? slush? light snow? not at all?
I found it much safer to switch lanes in 4x4 when snow is covering the stripes but put it back in 2x2 when in the groove.
At the Zilwaukee bridge I felt the rear end break traction and it got a bit scary, flipped the switch and it was much better.

My rule: If I wonder if I should switch to 4x4, I put it in 4x4.

I don't usually switch to 4x4 unless it's heavy snow or when crossing the piles between lanes. For light snow and slush I just slow down a bit and I generally feel pretty stable.

How many people would be interested in a winter trail ride this Saturday?

I had a Menard's rebate, so I bought (28) 40-lb bags of water softener salt. I only have 10 bags in there right now, 400 pounds.

A new Tacoma owner here, and it's my first pickup truck. Took the new Taco to the UP last month and had a blast! Looking forward to getting to know members here.

Bestop, Child Seats, petrified french fry, dog hair, empty Mtn Dew cans cracked windshield, scratches.
I've also used the Softner Salt. Buy enough for a fill and weight and don't have to worry about buying salt for a good while.

But i'm in need of a new topper. My Bestop worked great, but 5 years of neglect and getting beat on by the sun and dirt roads has it leaking and with bad zippers.

If you guys see one floating around I'd be happy to hear about it. Thinking of going Fiberglass.

With that much weight you probably very rarely have to use 4x4

I helped my nephew find a Taco back in August last year. He ended up with a dark green '01 XtraCab 4x4. He found out why you don't just throw cinder blocks in the back loose. He needs a new tailgate now after a little incident.

I have been on pretty much all of UP Overland's annual trips and have helped with them. Best thing to do is sign up on the forums on the website. I was going to hit Canada last year but the organizers hit a snare and couldn't put it together so a couple of us other regulars stepped up. We started on Drummond Island (the events never really went that far east in the UP), went to the Garden Peninsula and finished in Munising.

They are usually the very end of July/beginning of August and the event is free.

My attendance this year is up in the air due to some medical issues (anyone got an extra kidney?) but I am hoping to get around some.

Needless to say, there is always spectacular scenery up there. Plus you may learn some incredible camping spots.

You can always just gather some info on the forums too.
