My buddy tells me that the National Guard base at Camp Grayling has some good trails open to the public.

koditten you may not like the 90 degree weather! I am planning to get a pool next year though.

You got it wrong. I love the 90* weather.

I hit the keys every may/June to go fishing. Our base of operations has been Big Pine key, but that was pretty wiped out. Gonna have to do something different.

That they do, been up there quite a few times. Can find some interesting things around there as well.

Alright it sounds like this is coming together for the 23rd. We should pick a time/place to all meet up and elect someone with some knowledge of the area to be promoted to ringleader of this circus :)

Pizza hut plaza. Main drag of Grayling, would be my suggestion

After the ride, back to town and check out the Dead Bear brewery.

I don't think you will be able to run all the trails in one day.

Any trout fishermen in the group are going to have a hard time passing up the many accesses to the Au Sable river.

I won't make it, but I know the area well.

It also adds a bit of interest if artllery training is going on as well.

A bit of trivia: .Word has been spread that there is a live, Tamahawk missle berried in the ground near Heartwick state park. Apparently fell off a ' copter during training. Only what I heard from other service men.

Do not pick up shiny, unidentified metal objects, it may be unexploded ordinance. (I actually work with an individual that lost his hand because of this).

This is a great area to trail ride and enjoy a stress free day.

I was just over in Grayling last night picking up a trailer. My old stomping grounds. There are many trails the National Guard uses, and they used to publish the range activity in the local paper. I don't think they would have live firing this weekend, but you never know.

Without getting into too much detail, the weekend of the 23rd should be generally void of national guard activity (source: I am a MIARNG officer).

There are a TON of trails in and around camp Grayling, in recent years however, many of them have been gated off to the general public. We used to be able to take jeeps right out to the range where the A-10s used to do live fire exercises, wicked cool to watch. But I am not sure if those are open anymore.

It just so happens that I will be up at Grayling for about the next 2 weeks. I'll get in touch with Range Control and whoever else might have info about trail/range maps and whats open or not open.

I would also suggest that we meet at Paddle Hard Brewery right downtown, they have some fantastic fermented beverages. And also x2 on the fishing/Au Sable river. I'll probably bring up some kayaks for the weekend and hit that up.

    Sounds good to me!

You can drive around the range, but not into it (fenced off with several unexploded ordinance warnings - I don't think I want to go in!); but you can still park up on the observation hill with an excellent view of it.

I've found that the site will give you only one notification when something new is first posted; so if you overlook it/miss it/don't view it, you tend to not get another for all the replies that followed. There are some threads I thought had gone dead, then I check my watched threads, and it's like 20 new pages deep.

Grayling is a good time. Any objections to someone not in a Tacoma joining up with the group? I'll be with some buddies about an hour away that weekend. I might take off from them and head to Grayling. Might be cool to meet up with some other Michigan off roaders, regardless of what we're driving.
