Often times the DNR officers aren't properly updated on the laws for some unknown reason. They often learn through the same methods as regular citizens: hunting/fishing books that are handed out every year. No idea why the lack of communication, though.

Random question for the locals — anyone know of good spots for rockhounding? Mainly looking for Petosky stones or copper. My gf makes jewelry so we’re planning a local rockhounding trip in June.

The shoreline of any of the Great Lakes in the spring is a great time.

Lake Superior shoreline is a good spot for agates. We found some good ones around Whitefish Point last year.

Well, the state park in, well, Petoskey has them in numbers. The shore is mostly stones with a few sections of sandy beach.

This is by far the best spot I’ve ever found for Petoskey stones, but specifically after a storm. Big ones, little ones, tons of them. There is a trail that goes from the campground to it.

Here's the quote from a MI DNR page on that: "My truck has a street license plate. Do I need an ORV license and trail permit to ride on designated ORV routes? No. [..but wait for it....] Neither an ORV license nor a trail permit is required to drive a street-licensed truck on designated ORV routes. [..here it is...] If, however, the route is not passable by a conventional 2-wheel-drive passenger automobile designed for highway use, then the vehicle is being used as an ORV and requires both an ORV license and a trail permit."

o_O So unless you already know that the route IS "passable by a conventional 2WD passenger vehicle", it's best to be safe and buy both ORV license and ORV trail permit as others have said. This is my first year to do this in MI, so just figuring things out myself. Like, Where in the .... do I mount a whip flag on the FRONT of a stock Tacoma? Such offroad-front-bumper $$ pressure!

Thank you! That is some seriously subjective verbiage! I’ve got redneck relatives that believe just about any road can be traversed in a early model Chevy Lumina! I’ll just buy the tags/license and not have to worry about it. Thanks again!

Right on! :rofl:I have seen all kinds of I-can-do-it 2WDs busting all kinds of parts on ORV trails.

A relative of mine took some stock metal, drilled some holes in it, and then bolted it on where the recovery hook on the TRD OR bolts on (he has a sport so he doesn't have the recovery hook at all). He then was able to mount the flag pretty easily, but recommended a pool noodle for the front bumper portion of the flag pole.

Thanks for the idea! I wonder if it is similar to what I found on another thread (below). A good use of metal not being used on my truck. Now to fabricate!

Yep, that's pretty much what he did. Although, I think the post you shared was a little more involved than what my guy did solely because he just bolted it to the bottom of that box instead of the top.

Not I. However, seeing a truck almost exactly like this (with a few more extras) while driving through Munising is what got the Tacoma permanently stuck in my head. Although, I originally wanted voodoo blue. The rest is history.

Took advantage of the beautiful weather and hit up the Barry State Game Area and Yankee Springs today. Spent about an hour and a half on the trails. Obviously pretty muddy and slick. There was one section with pretty deep water I didn't trust so I turned around.

Smart. Toyota put a reverse in our trucks. Be a shame not to use it
