So as a Non-resident do I require all three? The License, trail permit and the passport?
I think I better call the DNR!

You will need all three, at least for Silver Lake for sure. Though I think a quick phone call to the DNR is probably a good idea just to speak with the professionals. Though unless you have the entire itinerary to your trip planned they might not be able to answer all your questions either. BUT the good news is that if you or anyone in your group is missing a tag/license/permit, pretty much all the places you need them to gain access also sell them onsite for the same price. We don’t like to discourage people going out and having a good time :)

I hope this gives you the assurance that you need to feel confident in carrying out your trip

Yes, you would need all 3. The recreation passport gets you into parks but doesn't afford you ORV privileges and vise versa.

    Thanks for the info!
I will call the DNR this am and report my findings for information purposes.
The trip will commence July 30/31st ish and we will return to Canada on Aug 5th. If any of you guys want to join up with us/me/ the group (lol) please feel free. It would be awesome to have a tour guide!
Haven't set an agenda yet other than crossing at Pt Huron and hitting the Dunes. Not sure if the dunes require more than 1 day to soak it all in?
Please chime in with any cool places in between the two points...

Ok here is the skinny from a Non-Resident point.
From talking to the DNR office in Lansing one would require all three (License, Permit and Passport) are required for entrance into the ORV parks I asked about. She wasn't 100% about all of them. She was very pleasant and helpful and even passed my number onto one of the DNR officers in the area to better answer any questions. I have yet to hear from him/her but I was asking pretty specific questions that she couldn't answer.
    Another question for you guys.
Do the ORV parks have an entrance fee as well as the requirement for permits/license/passport?

Yes, you need all 3. It is a state park so the recreation passport should get you in. I believe you'll be able to buy them there as well. This picture is directly from the Silver Lake Sand Dune website. I don't really think you'll need more than one day to soak it all in, but you may want more than one day because it can be pretty fun!

The top 3 on the right side are the most important. The DNR isn't going around checking the bottom 3 on the right. However you're definitely going to get stuck without 4x4 or proper tire inflation (assuming you're not on a dirt bike or sand rail).

After you enter the park, there will be a big parking lot before you actually enter the dunes where you can adjust your tire pressure, unload your equipment, etc. so you don't need to worry about doing that before driving to the park.

I was at the dunes opening weekend and just make sure if you are going in dune ready you are aired down and ready. They are doing an express lane for dune ready which is nice but you go right in with no chance to stop.

That's a horrible idea. What time?
Hey Michiganders! I'm considering a trip back home this summer to see family and want to explore the off road scene and camp a bit. Since I didn't have an off road capable vehicle when I lived there, I'm asking for a little help. Are there places / events / parks (besides the Oakland County park) I should consider for some off road time? Family is in SE area and the thumb. I some what familiar with the Standish area from a camping perspective, but not off-roading. I'll have a week, but this nothing more than a thought at this time. TIA.

    Official..
The Canadians will invade July 30th Crossing at Pt. Huron. Will head towards the Baldwin area and then to Silver Lake Dunes probably by the 1st or 2nd of August. We would love to have some local tour guides or tips on good spots in the areas your from. I will be there until the 5th and its kinda wide open for the back half. I have buddies down in Marcellus and Sturgis in the South so I could end up there near the end.
Pretty sure we are a solid 3 trucks so far...hopefully we can boost that number.
    Updates to follow.

Have you talked to Jeremy (New Holland Overland)? He is on here as @StellaHolland but not very often. He has a lot of trail data and often does trail rides around Michigan.

When time gets closer it is possible we will be at the dunes also, just havent planned that far yet.

Our big Toyota Takeover event on the dunes is August 13 if you wanted to try and make that, otherwise we might be at the dunes the weekend before

If you are on Facebook, there are plenty of groups in the area that will either point you to some good spots, or go on group rides quite often. Newaygo County Trailriders is a good one that covers all the way up to Baldwin and more. They are Jeep guys, but get into some pretty cool spots with all levels of difficulty.

Feel free to shoot me a message when you think you will be in the area. If I am free, I can show ya some cool spots that are not too bad, some of the stuff around Newaygo (Big prairie they call it) gets VERY nasty...

    That would be fantastic.
Sometimes I forget that this is my DD!!
Should be in the area July 31st/Aug 1st....depends on the group consensus. Those who don't have the whole week will want to head straight to the dunes.
    I'll keep you posted!
