I've been running a set of 265/75R17 Baja Boss's for a bit now. Their road manners are pretty excellent, I didn't see a drop in mpg's since putting them on. Off road they're very impressive, a recent trip through the Sierras (no mud yet) yielded great and predictable traction. I had no problem crawling up a stupidly steep trail, whereas a friend's jeep on toyo open country at3's behind me had some tire spin issues.

    I'd recommend them.

SL. I never owned this truck with stock tires, so my only comparison point is to Iron Man All Country AT's, and these are no louder than those.

Roger that. I’m the opposite - never driven anything other than stock so no idea how they compare to those or a more low key tire like the Cooper discoverer 4S. I’ll just need to take the plunge!

The stock wrangler territory AT that came with it. I got my Tacoma and took it to the tire shop the next day so I can’t provide much comparison. Before that I was driving a Jeep Wrangler since 2013 so this is my first Tacoma.

    265/75R17? Do you mean 70's they don't have a 75's in 265's.

Those ratings have nothing to do with puncture resistance. There may be a correlation between higher load rating and better puncture resistance, but that isn't the purpose of the rating.

This is my thinking exactly. Higher load ratings mean more rubber/material so there is a correlation there but it’s not 1:1… I would guess the Mickey Thompson’s are stronger than the stock wranglers from a puncture perspective even in the SL. There are myriad factors that go into making a stronger, more puncture resistant tire.

Oh good to know. I thought that’s what they were for. So it’s sidewall strength but not puncture resistance?

It’s purely a weight load rating but that naturally means stronger sidewall etc. I think it’s hard to determine puncture resistance outside of anecdotal input from places like this forum.

It's strictly a load rating, not even necessarily a sidewall rating. It's literally a "this tire will support x lbs @ y psi" rating, that's it.

True, some tires are more puncture resistant than others, regardless of load range. But, an LT tire will be more puncture resistant than its SL counterpart.

All SL tires are 4 ply rated, load range C are 6 ply rated, D = 8 ply, E = 10 ply. While there might not actually be that many plies, that's how they're rated. It's based on the load carrying ability of the tire, which also translates to overall strength.

Agreed 100%. But I also think these Mickey Thompsons in SL will beat the shit out of the stock wranglers in SL on puncture resistance. Same for Mickey Thompsons E vs Mickey Thompsons SL.

I think so, also. I hear nothing but good things about their MT's. Hopefully that toughness carries over to the AT's.

I’m between the Baja boss and the Cooper discoverer LTs in C load. Probably apples and oranges
