    Hello,
Got a cross country drive around 2000 miles that I have to go on next week, took my 2006 Tacoma to the shop and they told me my middle leaf spring on the rear passenger side has been broken. I will attach some photos.
Couple shops have me quoted at 1200-1500 for repair, but essentially my situation is once I get back home it would be infinitely easier to handle that financially. My mechanic friend said there is a chance I could move it back to the middle and get a u bolt and tighten it down and it could possibly get me back home. This is from VA—>AZ
Was wondering what anyone thought of this idea? Would save me over 1000 bucks which I would need to get back.

Try posting this in your regional forum that I posted above. Hopefully someone nearby can help you out. Lots of people swap out old leaf packs for an upgrade and the install is easy so maybe you'll get lucky and can use someone's old takeoffs for cheap.

What’s the tow bill and repair cost gonna be if you break another leaf on the road-trip?
Don’t do a “get me home” repair to prepare for a road trip

That’s an extremely good point to be fair. Essentially once I am over there I won’t have to use my vehicle and can save up money due to working remotely, that’s why it would be easier, but still, you are definitely correct

If your near a dealership have them run your vin,
you have the three leaf pack which is under recall, they will replace with four leaf pack for free.

Wouldn’t it be past the recall date? It’s a 2006.

No it’s still active. I’m a 07 and got mine changed last year.

    Do it, it’s free!

So even though I bought this at a used car dealership, I can go to an official Toyota dealership and they will repair it for free? I see that the recall is for the 4x4 and pre runner models, I just have a standard 2.7L 4cyl access cab Tacoma, nothin fancy sadly. When I run my VIN under the Toyota recall check it only says I’m eligible for an instruction guide on child restraints
    :(

Give them a phone call, and ask.

Tell them your middle leaf is broke & rubbing on the gas tank.

I had a middle leaf break a few years back. A local spring company made/installed a new one for $300.

I bought a brand new up graded tacoma leaf pack 3+1 (both sides) at the junk yard for $200 before I knew I was eligible for the free replacement leaf pack upgrade. Check on like Craig's List and see if anyone close has some take offs. It is less than 1-hour job with basic tools.
