Aha. I thought the paint was just messed up on top of the plastic. Strange.

I believe the paint he used had a pvc primer in it and that shit will melt the plastic to cause the cracking/dressing issue he had to start with.

I skipped over that part! Sounds likely.

I figured it was melted from paint stripper and pressure wash on soft plastic.

As much work as it will be.... Satoshi mod will be the easiest way to remedy. No matter what you do if you plan in keeping it your going to have to sand it to a semi smooth finish before you spray anything. I've used rubbing alcohol numerous times and never had anything similar happen. 80 grit sandpaper then 120 then 320. High hiding primer will get you close to smooth. I wouldn't spray anything else on that until you get down to a solid base (clean plastic)

Looks like you had incompatible primer & paint, if the base primer was urethane, putting something like an alkyd enamel topcoat on will create this effect.

Alternatively, if the original piece was raw plastic from the start, if not cleaned with proper final wipes/washes, the mould release agent from mfg will literally pop the paint & primer off with little effort.

If the pitting is light, try sanding, cleaning, and a decent aerosol epoxy primer compatible with plastics. If the pitting is heavy, just pitch out the 40$ for a replacement & consider the money well spent in life lesson dollars.

*Edit, as this was the second coat of the same paint, best bet, it likely either fully cured & sealed before you applied the trouble coat, or there was some form of chemical leaching from and incompatible solvent.

So I decided to throw on a coat of spray paint (white) and plasti dip (black) to see what it would look like with not much sanding, just to keep as a replacement grille. Not bad I think

The grille is dead, its hone, its past saving. Burry it in the back yard and have a nice little service for it.

Pitch it and don't for another second think about keeping it.

This issue you run into with trying to desperately trying to raise the dead with this grille is that even if you primed and sanded and primed and sanded you still have a problem with underlying chemical reactions. It will eventually come through the surface of the paint you put on, making all your efforts futile.

I'm very sorry for your loss but its time to buy a new grille and start over. Totally feel your pain,I effed up my interior trying to paint it (and replacement costs more than your grille). Happens to the best of us.

    Walk away. :)

You didn't clean the surface properly, gotta be cleaned chemically if you're down to raw plastic, then etch primed.

Just a friendly heads up

That's looking good. You finish it yet? I used a white bedliner on my samurai's nerf bars in the past.
