It depends on where you are I guess. Here it’s still 1-2 k over sticker on all dealers. Yes all in my city I checked since I was buying a car for my son.

When I see threads like this (I'm going to sell my truck due to high fuel prices and buy something more economical) it makes me wonder if the posters of said threads actually put pen to paper and do the calculations to see when the break even point will be. It's like the guys who spend the extra $,$$$ (or in some cases, $$,$$$) to get a diesel over a gas motor for the fuel savings (not the extra towing-I get that diesels are better for towing). Under normal circumstances, the diesel will definitely get better mpg than the gas. However, it will normally take well past 100,000 miles just to break even.
In the end, I'd say don't panic and sell the truck right away. The market for midsize trucks will likely be strong for a long time. And gas prices will come back down eventually. Ride it out and enjoy your truck. Or completely ignore logic, calculations, and common sense and do whatever you want!

Can’t disagree with OP I was thinking about selling my 13’ for around 17-18k (I owe 6 on it) and getting a corolla with a 6MT to commute with and banking that 11-12 grand. Just haven’t done it yet. My 13’ will continue to hold its value over time so it’s a hard call only 55k miles on it

I already found a 22 TRD Off-road same options as mine and working a deal for $39k out the door. Drove the truck for a year and made $2,500 on it and found a good deal in about 30mins of looking.

Cool man and happy Friday. Post pictures and report back once both deals are complete and you traded a used truck for a new truck + $2500.

The dealer is dealing? Not where I live an sr5 is 38k before fees and tax. They are mostly pre sold no negotiation - they don’t have to

    I got 4 quotes
    $42,500
    $34,685
    $34,500
    $34,900

This should tell you where the market is heading. Carvana is still offering $42,500 while vroom, carmax, local dealership are offering $34,500. The dealership where I can get new one for $39k has 38 Tacomas on the lot, 21 4Runners, and 12 Tundras. Gas is nearing $5 and people freak out, we’ve seen this before. They don’t have a single Prius and they put $3-4k markups on Corollas because people are only talking about gas mileage when they go there. If I had to sell the truck a month from now, I’d probably lose $6k, sell it today and make $2,500. Not too sure why many of you don’t see the logic in this. I do not pay sales tax and it’s about $175 to register the truck.

I know a lot of people who sold trucks this past year and made a lot more than 2k. I was one of the dumb ones who bought a truck this year and definitely overpaid by probably about 3 grand. But where I am at in life with home renovations and moving pieces of my project car around the 4Runner just wasn't cutting it any more.

But I definitely get those people freaking about with gas prices. I used to commute 90 miles a day. Raises in gas prices seriously affected my bottom line. Now I am six miles from work. And I visit my family once a week which results in about 150 miles every weekend. One tank of gas a week. Pleasure drives happen on a motorcycle that gets 55 mpg. But if I were still commuting hell yes I would be freaking out.

Yeah I made $7k on my 2019 4Runner TRD Off-road. 3k on my wife’s crappy 21 Acura RDX, and $3,500 on my 2016 BMW 328i 6MT (great car). Wife paid msrp for her 22 4Runner 6 months back but that took me about 2 months worth of searching. Can easily get them today. Seems like the party boat is sailing away a somewhat normal car market could return.

Prices from Vroom and Carvana will fluctuate daily, and by thousands. Last June Vroom gave me $37,400 for my 2019 with 18k miles. This was 3k more than I paid new. Before signing, I secured my 2022 for MSRP with cash down. So for $1,500 + tax, I moved up 2 years, 18k miles, 2 more years of warranty, the color I wanted, Apple Carplay, and power driver seat. I am really glad I made this move.

Sounds like you have gone through this already a couple times and can get by without the truck right now so go for it. However I do not believe prices will come down on vehicles as a trend until lots are full again and dealers need to push them out the door. Not to stay people don't stumble across a great deal now and then, but just be prepared for the worst. If you really like your Tacoma like I like my Tacoma, then hang on to it and enjoy.

Carvana just picked it up. She’s sold! I’ll drive the Mazda 6 for a little while and get another Tacoma. Love the truck but know I’ll be able to get as good of deal I got the first time or better moving forward. Not worried about that. Also my mom’s hippie spiritual healer said to not buy a new vehicle until the Mercury retrograde period is over with on June 6th.

    cheers folks

    Ahahahahhahahahahah

    That was funny!

OP you do you man. If your heart says try it, do it.

I don't think I can find a better truck or deal than I got, and I know my truck. I bought used the day Tennessee let the car dealerships reopen from covid. (pointedly not getting political on that train wreck)
    They were in a panic.
    That may happen again.
Especially Especially Especially if the economy craters, and easy credit dries up.
At that point repos go up, people can't get out of upside down cars, and inventory just sits. Then cash is king.
Other option somehow the devalued currency gets even more devalued and your cash is worth less every day. Then a physical object with a known use (your tacoma) costs more dollars.

So what was the point of this thread? Feels like the OP was just looking for someone / anyone to validate a decision he had already made.
