I had the fuel pump recall performed right before a trip that I drive a few times a year. It is about 300 miles each way and my mileage decreased 4-5 mpg when calculated by hand.

I called the dealership but they had no idea and told me to call Toyota corporate customer service.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any one have any thoughts about what might be happening? The dealership said the computer would have to relearn but when I said I had calculated the mileage they were at a loss.

    thanks in advance.

Computer needed to re-learn and you manually calculating MPG are not related. Computer is relearning shifting positions based on your driving style after the reset. It is not relearning how to do math.

Anyway, I wouldn’t use the MPG of a single trip to come to any conclusion. To many things like wind, air temperature, type of gasoline blend (winter vs summer) can influence MPG.

Thanks for the quick response. This is a drive I have done a lot and have been familiar with different conditions, especially wind on occasion. The only time I have had lower mileage was when I was towing a small fiberglass RV.

unfortunately most of my driving coming up will be into the mountains to go snowshoeing. Well I guess not unfortunate I want to go snowshoeing, it just won’t be the best driving conditions for determining what my highway mileage will look like.

Could be quality of the gas combined with it being winter gas, tire pressure and probably as cold as Hoth where you are now. If that pump was not providing adequate pressure and volume to your high pressure pump, your truck would have major power issues.

I'd be doubtful it's the pump and instead run a few more tanks through. You can always go back and have them make sure it's providing adequate pressure.

We haven’t had any power issues so hopefully just a weird coincidence with the low mileage happening right after the recall work.

While you were in there, did they apply any other tsbs? I'd they applied anything that reset your transmission adaptive learning it may just be relearning. I don't think that's part of fixing the fuel pump recall.

Not necessarily. They would have disconnected the battery which would make the ECU have to relearn life in general plus your driving habits in particular

I recently had the fuel pump replaced for the recall. I had my mileage drop as well. This “relearning” issue is non-sense. I drive a manual transmission so the computer needing to identify shifting points does not apply to me. I do feel a fairly significant increase in power. It definitely does not lag as bad as it used to with the original fuel pump.

I also noticed a reduction in MPG on the next tank after the recall. It feels like it is down shifting sooner on hills and on acceleration, but that is just feeling. Unfortunately, our fuel sources switched to Winter Blend about the same time, and I have always experienced about a 10% mpg reduction during the winter blend season. So, I'm not convinced the two are related vs coincidence.

    Hi everyone!
I just had the recall done 3 weeks ago, have also lost mpg. Dropped about 3 mpg since the new fuel pump. No changes in weather and my driving is the same no new trips or anything.

For whats its worth these trucks do run on gas. Bad fuel pumps usually mean no gas or lack of it.

If any of the previous posters reply maybe there will be some info about if/when typical economy returns.

The fuel pumps had the potential to go bad, that doesn't mean they had actually gone bad.

I had it replaced as well… I noticed a significant increase in power, also less lag… also 6-manual…. And also, a reduction in MPG ~ 2-3 mpg…. I’ll take the trade off.

You never recovered the mpg even when not utilizing the increased power/tq?

No, never. I use mostly highway miles. Before, driving as conservative as possible, I could get 22-23 mpg. I have never been able to achieve same mpg performance since.

I also noticed a reduction in mpg after the new fuel pump from recall. About 3 mpg less

Wow I’m scheduled to have mine replaced soon. Would like to hear from others who hopefully had no mpg decrease!

Mine acts exactly the same as before the fuel pump replacement. Mine was fine but decided to get it done because Toyota had sent me my 2nd letter. I get exactly the same mpg as I did before truck acts the same.

FWIW, I have to say my mpg reduction was most likely due to the winter blend of gas here in PA. While I still feel like my downshift kicks earlier, my mpg have returned to form, right about the time our blend switched back. FWIW, I made a run to Vermont and back in May and averaged 26 mpg. Plenty of highway, but once in Vermont some mountain roads too. Just me and my Brittany, so light load. Also noticed that I need to take every chance to fill up outside of PA that presents. Our fuel tax is just ridiculous.
