Recently got a letter from my insurance company. Stating I might be over the mileage stated in my Tacoma policy. They state they got the info from a third party! Does that mean Toyota is giving my mileage info to my insurance company. Or is my insurance company paying someone to sneak into my garage at night and get the mileage info? Might be time to look for a new insurance company!

WOW! I'd find a new insurance company. By the way, welcome to the forum!
EDIT: Check pages 9 and 10 in your owners manual about Vehicle data recording and transmission. Very interesting!!!

Welcome to the forum! We have no idea on your personal situation. My advice would be to go talk to a real person at an insurance agency. You will get real (not forum) answers to your real questions.
Sometimes you gotta get out and talk to people to get correct advice.

Well, this is very common in the insurance industry. Every time you take your vehicle anywhere they record the mileage and what was performed on your car. Then these places go and sell the information to the insurance companies. They run across the board. There are people that say they work from home and only drive sub 5k a year. Then they get serviced and the truck shows an additional 40,000 miles. Now the insurance agency is going to boost your rate because you're driving way more than what you're paying for.

Lesson learned, do the service stuff yourself.

According to the manual Toyota will not disclose the recorded data to a third party unless they have your consent (with some exceptions listed in the manual of course).

I wonder if some of that consent language is buried in the new car sales paperwork?

In the end, I am not too concerned with much of that since I do use a smartphone. I used to be a bit of a foilhead until I fell prey to having the world of info in my hand.

If I was doing something wrong that caused a major collision, well that's on me.

How may miles/year is your insurance for? (estimated). Mine is for 12000/year. Since I will have less than that,(11 months with 9755mi) will the insurance refund my money for not used mileage?
How many miles are you over your estimated?
Find a friend with a same taco with less pictures on ODM, take a picture and send it to insurance as proof. All insurance co. rip you off, save your money. Ask on the forum for a picture of the ODM in the range of (...).
In over 30 years of driving I never had one single insurance claim...why is my rate going up every year and need to pay for idiots that destroyed they cars???.

Just sharing - I have to report my mileage to my insurance company every two-three months.. I'm on a lower rate for insurance and I'm only estimated to do 12k/year... IF and only IF I go over, my rates will change.

That's not uncommon. But, when you take your vehicle to be serviced it solidifies if you're telling the truth or not. Ultimately, if you do your own work and never take your truck in, then you're the only one who will know how much you drive.

With the insurance I use, they have a class for 7,500 miles or less per year. I have been with this company for years (over 40). I have all of my insurance through them. The agent on occasion has asked for an odometer reading on the vehicle. This is done about every other year during a policy review done at the agents office.

The company openly admits they collect mileage information from different sources including third party to verify mileage. Some years I am a couple of thousand miles over. Some years I am under. It has never been an issue for me and the company I use.

Called my Toyota dealer, was told they never give out such info. Went to see my insurance guy, he says the info comes from the service work I have done. All my work was done by Toyota! I have 3 vehicles, all have the same 7500 mile policy. I prob put less then 1000 miles per year on my 81 VW pickup, less then 5000 miles on my 2011 Honda. I can't be very far over no the Tacoma, it has 12574 miles and was purchased 10/21/16. Each one of my policies goes up every 6 months!

I have state farm with an estimated 10,000 miles a year. Talked to the guy almost exactly a year ago and I asked him if he wanted an odometer reading. He said they generally don't bother with it unless you are at 7,500 or lower per year, because that is where their low mileage discount threshold is, but ended up saying sure anyway. I have done about 9,500 in the last year, but I don't think he will be calling to check up on it. I do all of my own servicing so they won't get it that way.

They report the service and mileage to Carfax...I am not aware of any dealer that doesn't at this point. But seriously it is time to switch insurance companies unless your credit score sucks. If it does fix that first since that is a primary factor in rate setting.
