Adding a chart with Miles per Tank.

 

I think we should have a requirement to posting mpg numbers: you have to take a picture of the Nav system. That we we can see the average speed & time. There’s no way people are getting close to 30mpg on the interstate at least not on the 4x4 Taco.

 

The in dash numbers are pretty damn accurate in my truck, hand calculated matches within +/- .1 or .2

 

I've gotten about 25 with a 4wd MT over 116mi on winter fuel. That was when I was mostly Stock. It was a highway trip doing about 65.

 

Same.

 

Mine is no where near that accurate. Usually off by + .4 to .6

 

Don't even keep track anymore by doing the actual math but its always around 20 mpg or over year round.

 

It goes based on the previous 20 miles.

I use my home-brewed fuel log that runs on the same concept of fuelly, but also tags into maintenance notifications/etc.





It tracks MPG long term. Ignore Jul 2020 being low, that's a road trip and my dumb ass thought "Yeah let's sleep in the bed under a soft topper in texas summer heat! THAT will be fine!" -- ended up sleeping in the cab and running all night for the A/C - dragged down the MPG.

 

That’s crazy. I almost wish the computer didn’t calculate idle consumption since I have to do a lot of idling. I’ll get around 20-22 but my average is always around 14 because of this

 

Yeah sounds like your truck differs a bit. My fillup last week hand calculated to 21.1 while the dash said 21.0.

 

2016 stock DC OR SB with 95k on it - 416/tank. Traded it in.

2021 stock(for now) 800 miles on it DC OR SB 365/ tank down to 355/tank today.

 

Wow. That is a lot of idling. When I look, it is just shy of 0.20gal/hr on a hot motor.

I rarely idle or use A/C. Year round, I drive off within 30sec of startup. May longest idles are at stoplights.


I wish A/C was still an option.

 

Gave up on mpg ages ago, just hang my hat on the gauge when filling and enjoy the ride.

 

About 2 or so hours a day. My truck is also a mobile office unfortunately. My commutes are usually around 20-30 miles in city, so short. I don’t think the A/C uses much fuel since its probably only using around 1-2 horsepower at load (source: Texas).

 

I have never looked, but OBD apps will tell you fuel flow. Ages ago on a different vehicle, A/C seemed to make a 10% hit?


The times that I have been to AZ, A/C was a must. I was happier without it growing up in PA. Here in WA, I just don't see the need for it, but my fam feels differently.

 

Miles per tank is basically useless information. Figure the miles/gallon or don't post. I can even accept the digital readout, but put it into MPG's please.

If you're truck is calculating the mileage to within roughly 1/2 mpg that is pretty darn good. In the grand scheme of things 1/2 mpg means next to nothing with these trucks. On a big rig getting 3-6 mpg with a 300 gallon tank then an extra 1/2 mpg is huge.

My Tacoma is old enough that it doesn't figure the fuel mileage for me. But on several other current and former vehicles I have that feature. Our old Honda was off by 3-4 mpg consistently. But everything else I've ever driven and compared the readout to hand calculations has always been within 1/2 mpg.

It's about driving style. The computers are programed for a certain style of driving. If your driving style matches how the computer is programed the numbers you'll get will match hand calculations. On a Ford you can change the calculations to match your driving style. If you're consistently off by 5%, 10% etc, you can set it up to account for that. Not sure if Toyota will let the driver do that.

 

I think this really depends. Average MPG is time based so it only remembers up to a certain point. Average MPG per tank has always been accurate for me.

 

I don’t think it’s that large of a hit. I think mythbusters did an episode on this and it turned out that above 45-50 mph AC was more efficient than rolling your windows down due to the added aerodynamic drag (which should say something about how little gas it probably uses). If you are idling, I bet there is some measurable difference.

 

Yep. I always thought that windows or a/c were about the same. Unless it is in the upper-90s, I just prefer the windows.
