SW CO mountains, 6sp MT, my truck actually likes to be around 3k rmps when going up hills or anything and I am averaging 20mpg. I went from Montrose to Boulder and didn't even use 3/4 of a tank of gas. I was impressed. 265/75r16 KO2s. I think its mostly long drives without stopping that it brings up the miles per tank and MPG. If you are in the city it will go down significantly stopping and idling and all that. Just what I'm noticing

Ever since I got my truck (brand new), to this very day, it always claims I have '394 miles until empty ' every time I gas up. I usually gas up when it gets down to 70 - 100 miles to empty. I never trust the computer, I always manually track my fuel mileage, currently using Fuelly mobile app as you can see in my .sig.

I live in the northern California Sierra Nevada foothills at about 1900' elevation. My office is 25 miles away at about 300' elevation. Before the "work from home" Covid situation, a good 70% of my weekly/monthly miles driven were that work commute, and I was regularly getting 18 - 18.5 MPG. Ever since I began working from home in March 2020 (to present), 90% of my driving is to the supermarket, gas station, in-laws house... all trips of <10 miles in total, and my fuel efficiency has dropped to just at 16.0 MPG. I almost never do any highway speeds this last year, so all the constant accelerating / stopping is killing my mileage.

    I'm offended.

I prefer windows to AC. I prefer AC to eating all the dog fur that gets whipped around when I roll the windows down.

Without reading every page and post... did anyone explain a "tank" is 21 gallons but most people fill up before they run dry!

So, the OP may be using the low fuel warning light (~17 gallons used) or the needle over the E line (~18 gallons used) as the place he is calling a tank!

I don't get great mileage, using horrible California (ethanol diluted) gasoline + being a heavier 4-door, 4WD model with an automatic 4.0 V-6. Generally close to 16 mpg typical use... 18-20 if pure highway driving, below 70 mph.

A typical "tank" for me, at 16 mpg, is 336 miles (16 mpg x 21 gal).
At the E line is 288 miles (16x18 gal).
At the warning light is 272 miles (16x17 gal).

So, the OP is getting 260... let's hope that is for the warning light point!
Maybe he should use regular instead of premium... I tested premium many times and my mileage was the same or worse than using lower-priced regular.

Road Trip. I've been using it since I turned to the dark side and got an iPhone, before that I used acar (which was several years ago, it looks like acar is affiliated with Fuelly now). It's not as pretty of a GUI as Fuelly, but it's a one time purchase and it breaks down some pretty neat metrics on a monthly or annual basis like mileage, gallons, cost of fuel, cost of services and total cost of ownership. All stuff easily calculated, but it has it already.

I was using acar before it was merged up. Definitely some nice features. About the only thing missing that I need is year to year comparos. Thankfully they export CSVs easily. I update my charts every couple months or so.

The pay once licensing was appreciated.

I have tried and for whatever reason, cannot wrap my noggin around Mac or iOS. They just do unexpected things that have thrown me off since the days of the Macintosh.

wow i feel like a dinosaur. i write down all this info in a little notebook i have. been using the same notebook since like 2010 when i got my jetta in hs. has a little sentimental value at this point tbh.

but i take the hand written note and put them in a spreadsheet and go from there. the graphs i made on here are from JMP if anyone is curious. used this gas analysis as an excuse to learn the software a little

Do you think 91 gives you better gas mileage? Especially for a low compression engine like the 3.5L, it doesn't. Stop wasting money and stick to 87 unless you're supercharged.

I usually get at least 300-350 miles from my 4.0L 4Runner, but it's highly dependent on terrain (hwy vs city, mostly), and how much skinny pedal.

Best thing you can do for better gas mileage is less skinny pedal.

That is all the info that you need. There is some cool stuff that an app can do, but I really just use the basics.

The app can track station location, octane, any tags that you might want to add, and more. Even though I input some of that, I only ever look at MPGs, costs, and other calcs based off of that. Mainly the stuff I put in Post 58 and some overall mileage, MPG, and volume calcs. Just the basics.

is your post supposed to be as long as the miles you get from a tank?

I was very far in the Android camp for the ability to customize everything. I eventually realized I just wanted something that just worked. I think a lot of the success Apple has is a result of them having direct oversight over all of the hardware. Apple has to write software for one piece of hardware while Android (like windows) has to write software for a wide range of hardware capabilities, so optimization is more in Apple's favor. The UI took some getting used to, but I found it more intuitive once I got used to it. Nowadays though, I doubt there's much difference between the two with the inclusion of widgets and the app library screen.

I do appreciate the privacy from Apple though. With Apple, you're the customer. With Google, you're the product. I'm not naive enough to think that Apple isn't profiting at least a little off of my metadata, but that's just inescapable in today's world unless I move to a 3rd world country. Or back to Lancaster.
I'm big on handwriting for taking notes and retaining information, but I'm also a process engineer so I want what takes the least steps to obtain the results I want. At the end of the day, this data is for my viewing pleasure more than anything else, so I found something that gives me the fields I want and I go from there.
Here are screenshots from the Road Trip and Fuelly apps for fill-ups and services.

I have felt similarly when I moved to the Google phones. BBs and Samsungs were okay, but bare was best.

I gave up caring about privacy when I got my first smartphone, within reason.

Regardless, it is all personal decisions and great that we have choices.

I'm originally from PA. Nope! Not going back. :D

21 gallons: Only if your tank is void of fuel!
How many gallons go in when you fill up?
330 miles divided by those gallons is your mileage.
Correct the odometer miles to true miles for non-stock size tires.
I think for many of us with the Off Road TRD package to bump up to 32" (265/75-16) from 31" (265/70-16) tires, we add 4% to get the true miles traveled, since our odometer turns less for larger tires.
