    Looking to head up there next weekend. Anyone familiar with the area? Looking for a good camp area near by, up in the the trees and mountains not down in the desert

    You can try to get a spot at Mt. Pinos Campground. It is east of Lockwood Valley and about 20 minutes from the starting trails for MJT.
    You can actually see the beginnings of your MJT adventure from the campground.
    The campground is at 8000' and quite a bit cooler than campsites in Lockwood Valley or Gorman.

    I have reservations up there for next weekend. You may get lucky and be able to reserve a site or get one of the 'first come first served' sites.

    McGill is another campground on Mt. Pinos. Availability can be checked with the link above too....

    There is also Alamo Mountain. There are campsites at the top, I don't believe you have to reserve them. You can access the road to Alamo Mountain through Hungry Valley. The road is paved until you reach Piru Creek and start the climb. The road is not well maintained, but easily doable in your truck. Once up there, you at actually at the ending spot for MJT. You could do MJT backwards from there.
