Even though my 2018 Tacoma was exhibiting problems such as engaging the brakes for no reason on a crowded freeway and other events common to this issue, the dealer that performed the service campaign work only resealed the sensor.

Since the sensor was sealed, when it rains, the system acts goofy. When using cruise control on an open, unobstructed road, and for no reason, the truck starts slowing down as if there was a slower vehicle in front, when there is actually nothing but open road.

I've spent at least six hours on the phone with Toyota who set up an appointment at a different dealer to have the truck inspected. In the stored data, Toyota found the incidents where the brakes engaged when they shouldn't, and other issues I've experienced, yet they refuse to replace the sensor. They say wait until it stops on the road again, problem is next time it does this I may well end up in an accident.

Yet again, I'm dropping off the truck for inspection next week. I've read various narratives about how this system works, from there being a radar sensor, to there being a camera. What exactly is a millimeter wave sensor on a 2018 Tacoma? Is there also a camera involved? If there is a camera, does the system store images?

If anyone can better explain this system or point me to a good source where I can read up on it I would be most appreciative.

The dealer has told me the sensor itself is about $330.00 dealer cost. Even though the truck is under warranty, I am considering paying to fix it as I don't want to end up dead in an accident caused by a defective sensor. If there are other components to the system such as a camera, that could be faulty, then throwing parts at it could get expensive.

On another note, the list of questions Toyota asks in order to try to avoid warranty repairs is unlike anything I've encountered before. They start out with questions about lifts and oversized tires, then get down to asking if it has a K&N air filter. They seem really disappointed when they hear everything is stock.

Do yourself a favor and read the K0B campaign document and remedy instructions. It details what symptoms warrant a replacement sensor.

Your owners manual is an excellent resource for info on how the system works. Just about every question you asked is answered in those two documents.

The millimeter wave sensor is behind your emblem, its the radar that is for collision warning and cruise control.

The Camera is behind your mirror and is for lane departure and collision warning with cars and pedestrians.

Lol. That owner's manual thing. It's unbelieveable how much info is in there. Better than magic.
