Hi there... I know there is discussion going on about Toyota denial of recall for grill replacement and truck lifts. Has anyone else experience the denial for after market bumpers? I just had this done to me. Tustin, Ca Toyota just denied my recall. Even though the bumper has no obstruction to the sensor or in anyway related to the sensor, the dealership showed me a flow chart that they said have to follow. I wanted to get some opinion about this from anyone else experience this. I have attached a picture of my truck and the flow chart I was given by the dealership

Also, my truck is stock hight with stock grill.

That dealership isn’t fully aware of the recall NON-denial process... search through the recall threads and you’ll find a letter to the dealers that explains coverage is offered on modified trucks. Maybe go to a different dealer if necessary... good luck.

i actually purchased my tacoma at tustin toyota. i'm going in for my first service on tuesday, but opted to make an appointment at another dealership, based on the other threads. i'll see how my visit goes and i'll chime in with my results. i'm currently on stock everything. the only aftermarket part that i have is the faux pro grille. my vehicle has the recall assigned to it.

question to those who have experienced getting denied:

if you're denied service for your recall due to a non-oem part, and they ask you to sign a waiver, what happens if you refuse to sign the waiver? do you just call it a day and go your separate ways? can you still continue with your toyotacare services??

The waiver would only apply to this particular recall and not affect any other toyota care services.

Just so I have this straight,

    1. OE grill that is standard to your VIN
    2. Tires are same size that is standard to your VIN
    3. Suspension is the exact height +/- normal variance of OE suspension standard to your VIN
    4. Only change to front end of truck is an aftermarket bumper that in no way effects the sensor

If all of this is correct, then yes the dealer is full of shit. Find yourself another dealer. I say this because it is my understanding Toyota is concerned about aftermarket bumpers that block or interfere with the sensor. The pic of the truck you posted does not appear to have a grill guard or anything else that blocks the sensor.

    Never mind, I am wrong.

I think the key that's being missed here is a comma. It's an aftermarket bumper thus weighs more than stock and Toyota's concern is that it might make the front end not the same height as stock.

I understand your point of view and agree to a point. However where does it end? If the sensor is the exact same height as what is standard for his VIN then the dealer refusing in this case is silly. I know it's strange that I'm defending an owner who modded his truck in reference to this recall but this is silly. Nothing in his case is interfering with the sensor, and he does not have a lift, and apparently the correct OE grill. In my opinion (and nothing more than my 2 cents) this is silly.

    Never mind, I am wrong.

When are you guys gonna get it through your heads that, if you mod it the manufacturer is not gonna cover it anymore? Times change. Rules change. If you find a dealer that does cover it then use it because that won't happen forever.
I like to mod as well as the next guy but I fully understand why they are going this way and that's to limit liability. Once upon a time everyone did not sue for every little thing. Now they do and Toyota (and any other company with a brain) protects themselves as best they can.

It's not Toyota's fault guys. It's all our fellow litigious humans.

Exactly JNG.. my truck is OEM everything else. Itchyfeet, I don’t think that is a factor of the weight of the bumper, every person driving the truck/passengers, and cargo weight differs from truck to truck. There is maybe 30-50 pound difference from oem bumper vs the aftermarket one I have on now.

And I agree with you completely. You, I and a very few have been saying this all along. However I think in this one case the dealer is being a little heavy handed with the 'rules'.

    Never mind, I am wrong.

Go down the street to the Toyota of orange. I have a pro grill and the service guy told me no problem. Just had to leave it overnight since it was late in the day

    @Speedysam11

Measure your truck at the top of the front wheel well. Go find the same truck as yours on a lot somewhere that is 100% stock. Measure it. What is the difference in ride height?

Hipsi, the original front end of the Tacoma is a joke, I barely bumped into a trash can that was left by someone in front of my truck parked at the curb. I bumped into it not knowing it was there, half of my bumper almost fell off. It’s all plastic put together with plastic pins. I took it off so I know. The only part that’s actually a bumper is a aluminum piece that is 2 1/2 feet by 4inch long. At the very bottom of the front end.

It's laid out in the flow chart and separated by commas and one of the things listed is aftermarket bumpers.

I'm sure i'll catch hell, but bumpers these days are no longer about protecting your truck. They're about protecting occupants and trying to reduce trauma for pedestrians
