So I've been talking up Milwaukee tools and the chainsaw in particular. Well, I have met my first issue with Milwaukee. Headed out to do some more cutting today and I brought 2 batteries. The 12.0 took everything we could throw at it till it ran out of charge. Put an 8.0 in and it quickly overheated. I don't expect the same performance from the 8 as the 12, but I was under the impression that the 8.0 H.O.s with their new cell technology was better than that. TLDR: don't expect prolonged cutting on anything else than the 12.0. Have another 12.0 on order and and still a happy camper with Milwaukee.

This arrived today. FedEx and UPS seem to not have the delays that USPS is experiencing. Seems well made, assembly was intuitive and will be a nice match with the 7 1/4" sliding miter saw.

Interesting. Is the 12.0 recommended for the saw? That Table Saw I bought recommends the 12.0 and the Miter Saw recommends the 8.0 for optimal performance. I have the HO HD12.0 and the HO XC8.0.

It said in the description on the saw it is optimized for the 12.0 but can work on any M18 battery. Though technically that's true, we were cutting today in 22°F weather and the 8.0 and 5.0 both overheated very quickly. I think for just clearing a road or a driveway after storm damage other batteries will be fine, but straight up cutting up multiple trees is not an option without the 12.0s.

Goodness, I make my living with Milwaukee tools. I have tons of stuff for work, lights, drills, impact guns, sawzall, giant hammer drill, band saw, giant grinder and regular grinder, on and on.....

Added the M12 Crown Stapler to the lineup. Some good deals on eBay, CL and FB Marketplace. People purchased or received big combo kits for Christmas and are selling the individual tools they don't want/need.

The high output should provide longer runtime and run cooler. I haven’t put them through the ringer on everything yet. Just found this thread. Good to see other reviews of how different batteries work with specific tools. @Larry Dangerfield how long would you say your expected runtime of the chainsaw with the 8.0 battery would be before overheating?

The part I didn't understand is, if the HO batteries are better than the XC, why are the XC are more money.

It could be a variety of reasons. I believe the XC still offers weight savings over the HO in the same size, 6.0 ah for example. And battery pricing in general is a little odd. I usually find the Home Depot online deals that include extra batteries. Last time I was in the 9.0 HD and 12.0 HD were both priced the same. Again, I guess paying premium for the smaller size of the 9.0.

In my circumstances, we were cutting a somewhat wet maple that was probably 15" diameter with a chain that could have used a sharpening but was not dull. It literally only made like 3 and 3/4 cuts before it overheated. Took quite a while to cool down and when it did it said it had 2 bars left. Pretty astounding difference between the 8.0 and 12.0. That being said, I have a combo kit coming with another 12.0 and 8.0 and I'm going to give the new 8.0 a shot and see if it lasts longer than the one I currently have just to see if my current 8.0 is a bum or if that's just how they perform in the chainsaw.

I’ll be interested in the results. You are moving from 2 5 cell groups to 3 groups going from the 8 to the 12. And the watt hours are much greater. So I could see performance and runtime suffering fairly significantly. But you should have the advanced cooling, so the overheating quickly is a little strange.

Yeah, I thought so too. I didn't expect it to hang with the 12.0 but for it to get almost no work done sure was a disappointment. If the new 8.0 does better then I'll know the current is a bum but if it performs the same then I'll know it is 12.0 only for chainsaw duty. I'm also going to test the current 8.0 in the Milwaukee fan on high and see how long it lasts. It fits perfectly flush in the fan and is the biggest battery that will fit so if it lasts 8 hours that'd be great for a day camping or in the garage.

I’m sure it’s a great battery for anything that would normally run a 4,5,6 ah. Might not be able to step up to higher demand stuff.

So I've got the answer to a question I know everybody in here had :D With the 8.0 battery fully charged in the Milwaukee fan running on high it was able to run for 5 hours and 26 minutes. Not too bad and if you went down one notch on the fan speed I bet you could get close to 8 hours out of it.
