No. 'Numbers matching' is for the Barrett-Jackson crowd, not normally the stomping grounds of Tacomas. In fact, even if he sold it outright someday (with lots of miles on it) it's inconsequential, since it has so few miles on it now.

No. That's pretty unrealistic. Fixing what's wrong is the right thing to expect.

Even if they come up with what seems like a killer deal to trade to a new one, be assured they are making money, and 'someone' already wants your dad's truck.

No. While oil will damage rubber, it takes time and soaking. A degreasing cleaning early in the process, then one with more detail if the engine does come out should be expected though.

Hope it all works out well.

I bought a Chebbie from a friend who always had a fast lube shop change his oil. First time I changed it, I discovered they had screwed in a metric oil plug instead of the inch plug, which of course would not tighten down. Dumb luck that it didn't just drop out on the street. Just shows to go ya, never trust that a minimum wage flunky will have the brains to do right, let alone the desire. If you must have a shop do your work, go to an independent garage, or even a gas station garage rather than a Dealership or a franchise.

Dealership is lucky this didn’t lead to an accident. They should have towed it back to the dealership to evaluate the motor.

Second and third the advice to change your own oil, no one does you better than you assuming you learn to do it correctly and use the right tools and products.

Unbelievable, they sent a tech to where she was broken down and they put another filter and oil in? What makes them think they can get it right on the side of the road if they can’t get it right in a multi-million dollar facility?

Dealer should have sent a tow truck as soon as she called. Push for a new engine, not remanufactured as everyone else has said. Unfortunately don’t expect much more, possibly some free services (if you’d even roll the dice).

The dealership was hoping that the "roadside assistance" would clear them of any guilt.. most businesses do not go all out to fix customer problems, even when the business is at fault.

5th Gen 4Runner uses a different version of the 1GR-FE engine used in 2nd Gen Tacoma's.

    Tacoma - Single vVTi - 4Runner - Dual vVTi

Everything north of the engine block is different on a 4Runner

Sadly this happens everywhere. During my career I had entry level Mechanics do this to Garbage Trucks,Dump Trucks, Dozers, Excavators, Police Cars, Pickup trucks, etc..........$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.. Not on a regular basis but enough to cause a stink in the budget.

    My opinion:

    - I believe that it will diminish value.
    - He can try, but its very unlikely they will agree as long as repair costs less
    - Everything that was saturated with oil

Yes its going to lower the value of the truck... but the dealer is only obligated to fix the truck not make it worth the same as it was.
If they can’t fix the truck thsts when value becomes important.

He will not get a new truck even if he pushed for it.

Oil doesnt harm anything so it being covered in oil isnt an issue. The only thing I can think it would impact is thebelt getting too slick.

Its a stupid mistake... but honestly shit happens. As long as they do a replacement with a free loaner it should be fine.
Lucky your mom knew exactly how to handle it and pulled over right away!

I’m wondering if they unscrewed the gilter to let it drain and then they never put a new one on and the old one was just left unscrwed.

@OP Yikes. What a shitty thing to happen. Glad no one was injured by this mistake.
If this issue had to happen anywhere, I'm glad it happened at the Toyota dealer and not someplace else, like at home or from another service center.

Hope Toyota makes it right for you.

You guys don't wipe the oil filter threads and seat clean before installing the new filter? (with a schmear of fresh oil on the seal/threads)

Didn't say I didn't do it, just that the seal getting left on is a common mistake when oil filters work themselves lose.
