I've been looking for a decent way to mount my phone somewhere on the packed 3rd gen dash and finally found something I like.

I didn't really want anything on the windshield or on top of the dash so options were somewhat limited.

I got a freebie "pop-socket" and stuck it on the back of my phone case to try for awhile. It's 100% removable and leaves no residue ands can be re-applied multiple times (I've tried it). Plus with it on the case I can always pull the phone out if I want it off temporarily. It looks like this:

And can also be used as a kickstand:

Anyway, turns out the thing is pretty handy so I bought the little clip for it. This clip actually fits perfectly on the A/C vent and doesn't inhibit the function much at all. The vent won't stay fully open, but about 80%:

You simply pop the socket on your phone all the way out, slide it into place, then pop it back down flush with the dash.

I think it looks pretty clean, there's no rattle or shaking even off-road because it actually rests against the top of the dash, and it's easy to navigate the screen one-handed.

I've had it for about a month and so far it's been great. If the phone is running hot or charging the A/C keeps it cool, and I can always turn off the flow to that vent if I'm using the heater.

I was initially concerned that the adhesive on the clip wouldn't stick great to the texture of the vent flap, but it hasn't shown any signs of peeling in the hot SoCal weather. I followed the directions and let the 3M adhesive fully "cure" for 8 hours before mounting the phone. I suspect if it's bitter cold for the initial application it might have a harder time staying on, in which case the last resort could be a small hole and tapping screw or rivet. I haven't been in cold weather with it yet but fingers crossed I don't have to go there.

If you're looking for a minimal, unobtrusive way to go hands free I've been happy with this setup so far!

Cool idea. Where did you find the socket clip and have you noticed any rub marks on the dash where it rests against it?

    Props to you, but ghetto..sorry.
    1) you loose an air vent
    2) you have a hockey puck stuck on your phone 24-7(yeah I know you can take it out of the case, then what's the point of a case..)

    Keep on keepin' on though

They sell the clip online but I found one at the AT&T store for $10. No rub marks on the dash yet, I'd be surprised if any ever do show up as there is very little movement.

I hear you, I tend to keep my phone in my pocket or in the charging cubby on short trips but there are definitely times when I need it accessible while driving.

To each their own, but personally I think the giant suction cup on the windshield with arm sticking out looks way more ghetto. Passengers don't even notice the black clip on black vent until I slide my phone on.

I usually keep the air vent open when I first get in if the car is hot, then once it cools down after a few minutes I'll pop the phone in place. At that point the other three vents seem to suffice.

I honestly didn't think I'd like the hockey puck either, but for me it hasn't been a nuisance at all. Kinda fun to fidget with too. They make nicer aluminum ones that look better if that is an issue for you. You could even get a second case, but I know that's not ideal.
