I see information about the max speed at 4 hi and 4 low. But what is the minimum speed you should drive at 4hi? I drive on dirt and gravel road and always have to slow down for turns and rocky areas? We that cause issues for my truck down there road?

No minimum. You can even drive in reverse. Actually the only limit I know about is the speed you engage 4hi. I don’t think there is a maximum.

Speed not so much but low range is easier on the transmission/torque converter if creeping along slowly off road and loading up the drive train.

@Willy Lump Lump, yes. Some times even at 4 mph. There are some spots with lots of rock. Small to medium size and I really have to slow down.

I said -4. Which is backwards.
You can drive any speed the conditions will allow in 4hi. But if you’ve never driven in 4lo you should try it out, it’s a blast.

I have climbed a mountainside "2 rut" for several miles (hanging on a rock face) - and found it completely blocked by a rock slide. You get very familiar with backing in 4 wheel drive.

You need to be moving in most cases for the ADD motor to shift and truly engage the front diff. The only exception to that is if the ADD splines happened to be perfectly lined up, then it will shift sitting still.

The transfer case takes very little alignment to shift. It pretty much will always shift no matter what. But you don’t get the light on the dash to go from blinky to solid until the ADD engages, so that is what you are usually waiting on. And if that isn’t lined up to engage, then you will have to move the wheels some before it will finally go.

In other words, there are no minimums. The only limit is that you have to be below 62mph for the shift into 4H to be allowed. You need to pretty much be stopped for 4L shift and if automatic, you need to be in neutral.

Reverse is a luxury most don’t need.

I grew up with a friend who's car did not have reverse,, yeah we chose pull through or flat parking spots, or had to coast back in to uphill spots. Even had a brick for a brake. Built character, though ya'll probably can't tell :D

That’s why the AT OR Tacomas are fricking dangerous to do that in. Any vehicle that makes you put it in reverse and depend solely on using your brakes to control reversing speed on a steep slope is just asking for trouble. Being able to also use the engine to control your speed when coasting downhill backwards by staying in drive makes that maneuver much safer. Yeah, you can use your ebrake too but damn, having to put it in reverse to back up on a slope is stupid. Even worse if pulling a trailer.

You certainly don’t want to be in 4hi reversing down a hill in a manual truck. The slowest speed you can go in reverse is pretty quick.

Manual I would put it in 4LO if creeping along. Automatic, go whatever you are inclined.

Yep - been there - also had a VW bug - no reverse - no big deal - did like you guys did and sometimes just got out and pushed. Didn't do the brick thing tho - no that he wouldn't have if he needed to. For a while he either had to park on a hill or we had to push him so he could pop the clutch to start. Finally he got a decent job when he graduated college and bought a Ford Torrino (sp?) (he always wanted one) that was a money pit but it was a bad ass looking car.

Been there done that many times. Gravity is key.

    Don’t forget 4lo either.

Gravel roads never need 4lo, 4hi all day baby.

The idea behind 4lo is steep angles and hard challenges that need more torque or gearing.

I've always felt like hard challenges in 4hi is hard on the converter or clutch so I always use 4lo and keep the strain down.
