So get a US phone and take it back with you. Lots of your friends and neighbors who winter here have them and use them year 'round

Do US carriers need proof of address? That's usually the catch and the reason those who winter can get one.

Also the hurdle that any time my friends or family would call, or if I call them, with their Canadian number it would be an expensive international call.

We switched to Mint Mobile a few months ago. We went monthly for the first 3 months to try it out for coverage. We're paying for a full year now, $15/ month per line. We have 3 of us on it.
The coverage is just as good as Verizon where we live but we do lose coverage when we get far off the beaten path, down near the rural areas of the Ohio River.
I'd say try it for a couple of months to see how your coverage is in your area.

How does that work? I have Verizon now on a monthly plan but it's nowhere near the price you pay.

    TIA :hattip:

Prepaid vs non-prepaid. The main downside to prepaid is you're the lowest priority on the towers. Not an issue 90% of the time, but you're the first to get throttled or booted off the tower in times of congestion. They also usually bill it as "unlimited" but there's usually always a limit where you get throttled afterwards (sometimes just during congestion on the towers). When I had Verizon (non-prepaid) it was around 22GB. Usually I didn't notice anything unless I got into a busy area though. If you want truly unlimited with no throttling or deprioritizing, you're going to pay for it.

What Redwings said. Although I didn't know about the priority thing. Doesn't affect me. But look up their prepaid plans and see if that works for you. I just know where I live, Verizon works the best.
