yes, I have done the mods
I did this swap last year. I have a 2012 SR5 that came with the standard matte-black mirrors.

The first thing you're gonna want to do is take your doors apart and see if you're pre-wired for the turn signal lights. There's a bunch of guides on how to do this, google around. The connector you'll be looking for is...

...so it may depend on what year your truck is whether you have the additional wires for the turn signals, and not just the power motors.

If you are pre-wired, then yes, it can be plug-and-play The simplest way would be to purchase the entire mirror assemblies from a Toyota parts counter like Camelback, but you'll pay $180 for each side, and you'll still have to purchase the color-matched cover for each side, another $40.

Alternatively, you can take your existing mirrors apart, buy just the signal lamps, just the color-matched cover, and handle the wiring yourself. That's what I did (I got some used turn signals from another member here). Matched up the wire colors coming out of the turn signal lamp with the wire colors on the inside of the door, soldered on a couple of quick-disconnects. It blinks.

If this project is low priority for you, keep an eye out on some local wrecking yards until you find some mirrors, then just drop $80 on the color-matched covers and save some bucks.

People have reported success with various 4Runner mirrors, too, but the wiring connectors don't match, so you'd have to do your own wiring with those, too.

Do you have to put those color matched covers on the mirrors?

Uh. I suppose you don't have to, but if you order the mirror assemblies from the dealer, they're not going to come with covers.
