So I just recently bought a 1996 Tacoma with the 2.7l 3rz in it. One of the problems that it has is that it misfires when it is at idle and slowly gets worse as the engine warms up. I've already replaced the spark plugs and wires with some from NGK. I've replaced the distibutor rotor and cap. I also just replaced the fuel injectors and fuel filter.

The misfire got a little better after I did the plugs and wires but the problem still persists. Do you guys have any suggestions?

    Are you throwing any codes?

Is it throwing any codes for the misfire? If so, try swapping coils with the missing cylinder.

edit: nevermind, thought I read 6 cylinder. As others have said, check compression, valve clearances, etc.

Have the valve clearances been checked? I had a burnt valve and it did this a little bit.

Same, neglected 4cyl's always end up with burnt valves and you start loosing compression pretty quick. Happened on my old 2.7.

Keep in mind mine had at least 250K when I bought it and I drove it for years until the valves burnt at around 325k. It was still my fault for not adjusting them when needed.

Did you do a compression test? My 96 taco blew a head gasket and had a miss with coolant burning in the combustion chamber.

Fuel injectors would be the next thing to replace.

So the motor was rebuilt 9,000 miles ago. It got new gaskets all the way around. So I really hope it's not a head gasket. I'm planning on doing a compression test soon... just need to get the tool. I'll check the valve clearances though.

It is also throwing codes. It's saying there is a misfire in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cylinder.
    Thanks for the responses guys

Swap the #1 plug wire for #2 and see if the code swaps.

    That many misfires? Oof

Check the exhaust manifold, I had a bunch of cracks in my old 3rz 4runner that I believe caused it to miss ... but I wasn't throwing any codes

Whats the coil setup like on that engine? Could a/the coil be the culprit?

Just make it misfire in cylinder #1 as well and it should start running right again. :D

Thats got to be driven by a coil at somepoint though? I would think a weak one might be the common thing between fires on multiple cylinders.

Duh, yea you're absolutely correct there has to be a primary ignition coil

    I've never personally dealt with a dizzy 3rz so I don't know
