    So your gonna wanna do an absolute timer set up. First go to tdc for number one and check your timing from the crank and verify with say a welding rod or something like that to confirm it's at tdc on number one. When that's done then you can look at your cam timing. You can then make changes to your camshafts. In Toyota tech files the cam lobes are in a specific position. I'll see if I can grab those.

    Got everything pulled apart- when I pulled bank 1 intake cam I noticed a nicked bearing. You can see the discoloration on the back from the heat.

    Cam is still smooth no sign of wear.

    AAAHH!! Got everything back together fired up quickly and did a couple of test drives. Code P0012 is back! Idle is rough and you can hear a little miss. With the pics in my above post of the babbit bearing wear on bank 1 intake cam shaft I'm thinking that maybe the remanufactured head has an issue with the intake cam - or maybe I just can't get the timing right LOL. I have a trusted shop I'm going to take it too - my question is can a competent shop diagnose this to determine if it is mechanical or electrical without having to tear into the timing cover again? Also, I've come across posts where their saying an overly machined head can cause timing issues - oh what a rabbit hole this is!

    An overly machined head can do just that. Say you have a resurfaced head where they take 0.005"s off. You are supposed to try and make that up with a 0.005" thicker gasket.

    Thanks for the timing help @mightytacoman. I used your camshaft pics and took my time and had a mechanic friend come over to determine I had everything lined up along with camshaft orientation so I'm definitely feeling some despair right now, but what you gonna do right.

    So I took the timing cover off for the 3rd time and been trying to set the timing for the last week and tried different set ups with advancing and retarding teeth on the cam sprockets. No matter what I try when at top dead center I can not get the passenger no. 1 piston camshaft lobes to mirror each other. The intake lobe is always half a tooth lower then the exhaust cam lobe. Only other option I see from here is new timing chains or I guess maybe thicker head gasket on passenger side head.

    Just to double check with @Torspd and @mightytacoman my bank 1 cylinder 1 camshaft lobes should be %100 perfectly mirroring each other at top dead center- correct? No slight variation allowed? Again I've tried adjusting just the cams over one tooth - lobes don't %100 match after rotating engine. Tried advancing one tooth on main chain over, still no match up. It is only a slight variation between lobes - maybe 1 or 2 millimeters off from mirroring each other. I'm going to pull the heads and measure thickness. So after removing heads I just measure head thickness of each bank and reference that to the max head thickness specs from toyota - then order the cometic head gasket thickness which should match me up back to max head thickness spec.

    In one of the pdf documents I printed off a couple years ago, it showed cylinder 1 cam 1 mirroring in one of the pics. I have since not been able to find that pdf online and I gave all that paperwork away when I sold the truck..
    I'm stuck at the hospital on call till next Saturday. After that I could pull the valve cover off the spare motor I haven't sold yet and take some nice pics for ya.

    Last update! Finally, got it all back together for the third time. Put a new VVTI sprocket and new chains and still P0012. I'm going to start parting it out - supercharger, longtubes, etc... and put everything back to stock. Going to sell most of it locally since I'm in Hawaii and don't want to deal with shipping. Oh what a shitty way to throw in the towel for my magical Tacoma. It was a good ride while it lasted. Bad timing, but I was able to lock in a replacement vehicle without having to pay over MSRP. Here she is - my new Midnight Black TRD Off Road Double Cab Tundra!

    new everything, new vvt solenoid, new pigtail connector, new vvti sprocket, new chains, swapped cam position sensors. Even pulled the cylinder head and blew out all the oil passages. After doing the timing cover for the third time I’m 99% positive timing is good. Starts and idles fine, lags power when pulling on highway- running a little lean per a/f guage which I assume is from retarded cam - no lean codes. Did propane check and can’t find any vacuum leaks.
