The 95-96 and distributor 97, 2.4l and 2.7l have the cam position sensor built into the fixed distributor. If a problem like this occurs you will need to add a cam sensor somewhere somehow.

You have to have correct head for your wire harness/distributor set-up.....
you could pretty much stick anything else under these to fit either 2rz or 3rz....blocks/headers, ect., ......

Even the ecm....I used 2rz one to run 3rz for 4yrs, and then stuck it back in a 2rz.....which still purrs like a ........
...only the head and harness matters...
    well of course....and the tranny.....

If you buy an after market head, they usually know this and either have stuff pre drilled that not be for your year and you have to plug....
or they have a paper thin knockout where something on certain years use....ie....the distributor hole right front....
my new head came with a hole there, and the mechs stuck a freeze plug there.....because I'm EFI....98......

I didnt build my engine, just got to pick out each piece,
I let the mexicans do mine, god bless em, they do hundreds....
they'd pulled a Hummers 5 cyl engine and had it on a stand next to mine....

Dont think there are any studs that penetrate the oil barrier,, ,,, like you've got to be careful with on the drivetrain.....for weep-age....

Just finished my swap, I ran out of coolant on my 98 2.7l and warped my engine block. Bad compression gasket the works. Decided a motor swap would be easier and lo and behold I got a distributor type 2.7l off ebay. Distributor was easy, pull it out, cut a piece of sheet metal to fit the coil packs off the original motor over with form a gasket to help seal the hole underneath them. Next issue was the camshaft sensor, I pulled off the valve cover on the new motor, and used a dial caliper to discover the hole for the camshaft sensor is 18mm, I found a close match in standard I think it was don't quote me but a 23/32. Just order an 18 but double check before you drill. At this point the motor was in the engine bay, wish I had drilled on an engine stand or even on the hoist... drilled and tapped a hole for the screw to hold the sensor in and I missed. I elongated the hole made sure it landed in roughly the right spot and used black formagasket and the newly threaded bolt to hold in the sensor. Hand drill and a 20$ drill bit. Use a punch to mark your centers on both hole and tap before you start. Computer doesn't know the difference. I did buy a new camshaft sensor cuz I figure it's out, and it will suck if I ever have to change it.... I don't want to remove the value cover again if you know what I mean. Anyway next issue was the intake manifold, I started with a 4 port and the new motor has an 8 port. I just used the one on the new motor, modified hose lengths and it now purrs like a happy kitten. Actually better than my original motor ever did. The truck has been in the family since it was new and now it has been reborn with some 250+ miles on it.

Make sure you don't leave any shavings in the valve cover! Also plug all the holes of your intake with something clean as shavings in there will also reak havoc on your engine!
