I was under the hood yesterday and noticed the cap was gone, took it to the dealership that did the oil change 2k miles ago and they apologized and did another change and replaced the cap. The service manager said they almost never see returns with missing caps. I feel that I would have noticed the cap missing before now so seeing this makes me 2nd guess my original idea that the dealership forgot to put the cap on……..another thing to keep an eye on I guess!

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Because no one looks under their hood in between service. There have definitely been a decent number of others whose cap was missing after dealer did their pokie.

Wanted to let y’all know that I might have figured something out at work today. On these oil caps, if you thread them in cock-eyed, which is very easy to do if you are in a hurry, it feels like they are tight, when in reality, they aren’t, and the least amount of shock, such as a large bump in the road, will cause such an oil cap to pop off.

If you can properly tighten an oil cap you shouldn’t be around mechanical things period. And I’d worry about someone being able to operate machinery such as an elevator in that state

That’s just maddening the unhelpful. If that’s all it is, then why the heck are so many of these things coming loose?

EDIT: I wish to goodness you would tell my service advisors this. They expect 3 people to handle 40 plus cars a day in express lube alone, and they want the whole experience of bringing the vehicle to the service drive, writing up the work order, driving the vehicle to the shop, the Porter giving the RO to the shop foreman, the shop foreman catching up with his own repairs and assigning the work order, doing the work, the service advisor talking to the customer about any issues we found, getting approval to fix those issues or declining the repair, Porter driving the vehicle back to the service drive, and the service advisor closing the work order to take less than an hour.

Elevators in the states haven’t needed professional elevator operators since some time in the 50’s when an elevator operator strike convinced everyone to switch to self service elevators.

Nice history lesson with the Elevators. I am also a victim of the missing oil cap. Thankfully I caught it after 200 miles.

IMO it is just simple negligence and poor training of the techs doing the job. Yes, I understand they may be "junior" but perhaps that's improper if they can cause a $30k warranty claim in a blown up engine by not being able to complete a task as simple as this. They should not be employed if they can't follow a process that takes 10 min to learn.
