Hey guys, new to this forum but not to forums or vehicles.. Well I just bought a 02 tacoma Prerunner, it has the rr lock button on the dash but seemed to be dead. So I crawled under there to have a look and I didn't see any wiring going to the rear axle at all.. Suspicions raised, I started reading about what these rear ends with lockers look like, and I think I got duped. Are there any electric locking rear ends that don't have the black box on the top??

I can take pics and give any answers to questions anyone May have.. I'm just going crazy at work thinking I got screwed lol.

    Thanks in advance guys.

If there's no actuator motor on the driver's side of the rear diff, it doesn't have an E-locker. There are several combinations of 1st gens that had the TRD package but no locker, depending on the combination of motor, transmission and body type. I believe the 4 bangers with the auto tranny didn't come with the locker, but manuals and the V6s did. Doesn't really explain why it has the RR Lock button though, unless someone swapped the axle out.

Yea The rear end I have now doesn't have that actuator. Mines a 4door v6 with an auto trans.

At this point Anythings possible lol. I did pull the button out to see and it is plugged into a harness. But I have never seen the light on the dash for the locker light up.

Hopefully it's there. A lot of the motors leak moisture and stop working. Hopefully thats the case and you can just disassemble and clean it up.

That's a regular axle housing. Was it advertised as having a locker or did you assume it did? I claim ignorance on the truck, did the prerunners come with lockers?

There is no digit in the vin for trd or not, and there is no listing of which sequential numbers were trds.
    Call the dealer?

Regardless OP, you have trd badges, diff button and no locker. Shady no matter what.

It was illegal for the previous owner to sell you the vehicle without functioning smog equipment. Unless it was a parts only vehicle.

You may want to contact them first.

I do have a spare brand new front Ca Legal cat for sale, please confirm your engine family code though. H or F I believe are the differences.

Yea I noticed the cats the next day and I was able to squeeze 200.00 out of him for the cats. Ain't enough to buy one but it was better then getting nothing from him.
