A Toyota dealer can access the factory build sheet using the Vin # TRD models are factory installed options. So they can but may not do it for you as it takes time to look up.

Interesting mystery here. If your truck began life with an e-locker, there should be unused connecters dangling above the rear axle. I don't have an e-locker, so I don't know exactly where they would be. Maybe someone who does, can chime in.

It sucks he got scammed it almost happen to me. I bought mine from a small shaddy dealer but I had it inspected by Toyota. Is a small price to pay considering I saved $2000 when I brought it back to the guy selling it. Mine had a fj spare with a missing tps and cracked front rotor and bad wheel bearing. So I was able to talk him down $2000 to cover the cost of fixing those issuse .

Called a dealership, I must have got the most helpful guy I could have asked for.. It's NOT a TRD equiped model. It's an SR5 with almost every option installed as well as wheel and tire package (fender flares and 16" rims).

Yea I should have done that. I just didn't wanna miss out on this truck cause it was everything I was looking for. Still is minus no locker. Would have went 4wd if I would have known beforehand.

I guess after the cats are replaced, I'll look into after market lockers. Or double check for factory locker wires.

Too bad it was a private party sale as I would just return it.

I'm sure if it was a good deal you could resale or trade up to 4wd. And take little to no loss. If it was a real good deal you could possibly make some cash.

I took a 10k loan to get it.. I mean it's a nice clean truck. Just sucks that one of the major selling points turned to be false. I guess it's another lesson learned lol.

For less than $1000, you could install a Detroit Locker or Detroit TruTrac LSD.

The TruTrac LSD sounds appealing.. Have you installed one before? I'm a fairly handy mechanic but never worked or rebuilt a rear end. I got a quote of 950.00 for a complete drum to drum e locker rear end, with tax and shipping I'm looking at close to 1200.. Plus wiring etc. I have a posi in my other truck (4x4) and its awesome. I'm just thinking about the install.. If it doesn't require backlash adjusting and all that then I think I'll just get the lsd.

Sorry about the news OP. I had the opposite happen to me. I bought my Tacoma from a Chevy dealership and when I commented to the salesman about it having a locker, he said "no it doesn't, it's not a TRD" so I just immediately shut my mouth as it did have one. I got a great deal on my truck :D

The only time I used my lockers in my land cruiser was to drive through sand. I'm thinking of a trutrac for the rear of my truck. It's more likely to prevent trouble from happening ahead of time. Unless, of course, you're diligent about turning on the lockers prior to trouble.

I had Zuc rebuild my LC differential, he lists a lot of installs here:

BenCO, freaking awesome man! Talk about a come up. Congrats Man. I don't have luck like that haha..

I honestly don't NEED one, I live in so cal for gods sakes, but the last time I went out shooting I took my dads open diff tacoma and couldn't get out of the canyon due to a hill with many ruts. And my old 06 gmc I had way back when had an open diff, got that thing stuck in some sand the first night I bought it. I now have a k10 with posi and almost never need to use 4x.. Maybe it's the tires? Flexy suspension? I dunno, but I feel more secure with at least a posi.. The tacoma I have now is sitting on 33" MT's so I prob won't need the new diff but i dunno, kinda on a tangent now lol

Yes, I sent him my 3rd member & he rebuilt it with the master rebuild kit that I had shipped to him. I didn't do anything fancy, just had the 3rd member rebuilt with new carrier & pinion bearings.

This was 2010, so I imagine labor & shipping has changed. Labor was $250, shipping was ~$60 each way. The 8.4" 3rd on the Tacoma looks half the size of the 9.5" 3rd that I sent him, so shipping could be less...or just the same.

I received pictures & notes from the install. Ken "Zuk"was great to deal with and always was prompt with email/communications.

I did a full rebuild, which is the same price as switching gearing. If you just need the truetrac installed, labor will likely be less. No need to remove the pinion gear. Just install the truetrac, new carrier bearings & reset the preloads.

If the Tacoma isn't your daily driver, I recommend doing it yourself. If you get over your head, just take the 3rd to a local shop to set the preloads, or swap shims.

Another option is to take advantage of East Coast Gear Supply's prebuilt 3rd's. This will run you about $1200 (inc. TrueTrac). You won't have any downtime (other than swapping 3rds), but in the end it costs a few hundred more than doing it locally due to shipping & the fact your essentially buying a new set of gears.

(edited: after looking at back emails, realized it was in 2010, not 2009 that I had the work done)

does the Tacoma V6 have EGR? Thought only the 4Runners did? (DT headers are different for each)

    Could always scour the webs/junkyards for a used 4.10 e-locker and pick-it yourself :)

The real question is whether the wiring is part of the loom that runs the frame. The button wiring I can see being part of a master loom but having to run additional back to the rear is not always the case.

I'm not sure if it has an egr. It's got a TRD supercharger installed so im not sure where the egr would go..

Yea I was thinking about that also, but Knowing my luck, I would find the one that just so happens to have been made in some other country and was only used for a month at toyota. I'll buy it and it won't work lol.. Just my kinda luck.

Yea I'm not sure if the wiring is there or not. I havnt had the time to open the loom.
