Hi all. I bought a 2020 TRD Off Road new, and it includes the tow package. The sticker indicates that there is an oil cooler, but there is no mention of a transmission cooler. The oil cooler is in front of the radiator, on the drivers side.

Yup, this is the cooler that is being discussed in this thread. It's the transmission oil cooler. Sounds like your 2020 was manufactured before the change occurred last March.

Just checked my 2020 OR with a build date of 8/19 (which also has the antenna moved slightly forward so the stock roof rack doesnt work) has the Transmission cooler

TOYOTA has improved the transmission for better cooling performance, work more efficiently to operate cooler. It has improved engine power delivery and at full rated vehicle load is keeping the ATF fluid below the 20% target max.

No worries, but I can’t help worrying, sorry Mike.

A Tundra’s 2020 transmission failed at 20k miles with burnt, black fluid. Owner tows a small trailer 5 days a week for work, just like he did with his previous Tundra, which had a transmission cooler. Post #92 on this thread is where the story starts.

It’s not 100% proof that the missing cooler caused his transmission to fail. But it does not look good.

They're full of shit. They run their trans temps "high" on purpose to reduce parasitic losses and eek out more mpg

2021 TRDOR and do not have an aux xmsn cooler, yet I do have the tow package. This weekend doing some light gravel and dirt road in 4H. I got xmsn over temp and my truck shut off automatically.

Not feeling safe if I was to tow my boat at this rate, having my eng shut down doing 60+ with a trailer on the interstate. Not good....

Has anyone truly figured out the deal?

Truck was towed to the dealer and they are working on it to figure out the possible issue.

Any update? I added a cooler to my Tundra. Same parts that came on the 2018. I find it hard to believe that this exact same transmission all of a sudden no longer needs the cooler it was designed with and had for years beforehand.

I'd be cool with that if you haven't started it yet or abandoned the idea. Just bought a boat and when I was looking to see if I had the tow package, realized that I've been swindled into thinking I had an ATF cooler.

This is a mod I will do later on, did you add ATF fluid after the install or did you run it as is.

I would think you will need to at least add the coolers worth of transmission fluid.

Just wondering how much did it run you for the OEM setup if you don't mind saying?

sorry to butt in. Been wondering about my transmission lately. sitting at 97,500 miles. What should I do to service/maintenance it? I have a write up from a toyota dealership quoting me for a $359.95 for a standard transmission fluid exchange. I have a 2.7L 4 cylinder by the way.

should I do a fluid exchange? I was interested in doing amsoil fluid and doing a complete flush and running the amsoil after. How many quarts does the transmission take? Any tips/advice anyone can give me?

Thanks for the info, I agree with you OEM is the way to go so there shouldn't be a warranty problem and also for appearance. A little pricey though.

ok, now I'm going down the rabbit hole, and I don't even have the truck yet.
so to summarize, Toyota did away with the external ATF cooler because they deemed it not essential based on modeling and testing?
I don't plan to be towing anything but a small trailer, and if so, super infrequently. BUT - do we have assurances
that since the ATF cooler delete that the transmission simply does not require cooling?

    triggered.

Drippy4x4, does that mean the ATF passage in the radiator is inside that of the passage for the engine coolant? In other-words, what is separating the two fluids?
