Mix and match features on a new Tacoma?

I have always wanted the basic model of whatever I am buying, especially in vehicles. I figure the fewer moving parts the fewer things will go wrong, and I don't need any fancy features. The more basic the better: Non-electric seats, basic dashboard, no moonroof, limited audio features, etc.

I'm looking into buying a Tacoma new in the coming years and really like the basic features of the SR 4x4. My only complaint is that it doesn't have the locking rear diff. I live in the west and have really found that feature useful on all the other trucks I've driven.

My question is this: Could Toyota deliver a truck with the locking diff AND all the boring features of the SR? Basically an SR with a locking rear diff? Another question is, if I got a basic SR without the locking diff how unrealistic is it to get it aftermarket? I assume that it is very unrealistic.

Maybe my assumptions and question are very naive, sorry if that's the case.

It’d either be special order, or probably have to be an a swap or aftermarket install.

I say no. Adding one aftermarket is possible but does come at a cost. Also, you are gonna have TSS on the new model because it’s standard on all trims this coming model. Just really weight it out and make a decision when the time is right.

One more thing, if you go aftermarket locker and it fails for some reason it will not be under warranty from Toyota.

You could easily get a rear locker installed. It’ll just cost money, but still significantly less than a trd offroad

Toyota isnt like domestic manufacturers, there are no special orders. Trucks are optioned / spec'd out with associated trims and allocated to dealers. So no, if you want an SR you'll need to go aftermarket for the diff.

You'd go aftermarket....but you would still save over a TRD Off-Road. I picked up an SR5 because I didn't need (notice I did not say I didn't 'want') some of the tech and features on higher trims. That said, I went used and have been able to get an Android Auto Headunit, a 2-week old (new) OEM roof rack, and some small awesome updates like the Pro grill and front camera. Had I have gone with an upper trim I would not have gotten those items as easily and they are what I really wanted. I'd encourage you to stick to the SR if that fits what you really need and get some quotes on an aftermarket locking diff what will work for that tranny. Good luck and welcome to TW!

By the time you bought and had an aftermarket locker installed you would have almost as much as it would cost you to just buy an OR. Also the OR would be worth more when it's time to get rid of it.

You can get a good aftermarket locker if you want to spend the money, and maybe it'll be cheaper... Hard to say. But maybe you could just go with a base model Offroad without the tech and luxury packages. That might not cost much more than an SR5 in the grand scheme of things.

I agree. So many people say “oh just add it on”. Few people have successfully done this though. I say avoid the headache and just get an Off Road and have the piece of mind of a warranty.

As has been said above, I'm pretty sure you can get an OFFROAD trim without all those things you mentioned above (in fact, we still don't have electric seats and I would have wanted them). Unless you're really stuck on the SR5, or the price difference isn't manageable.

Don’t listen to these hoes. Get the sr & add a locker. Lol 30k for one, plus 2k for a locker? You got yourself exactly what you want

Exactly, it's only a couple grand higher than the lower models.

Correction... He said he didn’t want a bunch of tech etc. The manual in the basic config has no crawl and no heated seats, electronic climate control, etc. Stripped down it’s a MUCH better buy. I’m not gonna keep going back and forth because he said what he was looking for and we are giving him true well thought out advice. It’s just not worth it to buy a lesser model just to add on features that are at least warrantied for a good amount of time.
