I get it. I don't put enough miles on my Taco to do multiple oil changes in a calendar year. If I was use the 5W-30 this would probably be the best way to do it. Next scheduled oil change is Nov/23.

I know. As soon as I reread the post for errors and realized I had asked an 'oil' question I knew I was going to get slammed. Oh well it's always fun to get differentiating views. As long as no one gets hurt.

The VVT is controlled by the Oil Pressure and viscosity. I would not, but your truck, your decision. Donate the oil to a charity like a Fire Station.

I just attached the PDF extract from Toyota.mx at the bottom of this post. Toyota officially endorses 15W40 in ambient temps above 10F (which is still below freezing).

Interestingly Toyota doesn't sell the 4-cyl Tacoma in Mexico. Buyers looking to save money would go for the Hilux.

You can and you’ll never notice a difference unless you’re starting it in a driveway in Fairbanks Alaska.

I have mixed oil weights and brands(only full synthetic though) for about 3 years in my 05 Civic 1.7L and 08 Tacoma 4.0L without any issues, due to my old job there would be 1 quart of this oil and 1/2 quart of that oil and 1/2 of the other oil.
If you are in New Orleans I might buy the oil depending on the price you want.

The problem would be the higher weight would cause an increase in oil pressure that would result in damage, force oil past rings. What you are talking about isn't going to lead to that. You'll be fine.

Keeping the same brand is probably intended to minimize unwanted interactions between the additive blends that various mfg's use.

I was thinking oil too heavy for the recommendations would be bad for the valve cover gaskets? :notsure:

Guess what weight was spec for Toyota before 0W20 even existed?

The oil grade in question here is what is recommended for the 2.4L I4 . I4 v V6. I don’t know enough about mechanical engineering to know if that makes a difference.

Seriously wondering what else I am missing out on by not using the Owner's manual from Mexico? Any suggestions are duly appreciated.

I promise you can put 5w30 in the engine all 6 quarts and never ever in a million years will it cause the slightest problem.

Remember that 0W20 when cold is still orders of magnitude thicker than 5W30 at operating temps. Higher weight may cause the oil filter bypass valve to open more often, that's about it.
