    Nonsense post.

The 2GR-FKS is used worldwide with a number of different oil viscosities.

Use whatever viscosity matches your climate and vehicle usage.

I love a good oil thread. It really separates the wheat from the chaff.

Not to mention that all 0w20 passes straight through 5w30 viscosity as it warms up. Literally every time you run your motor with 0w20 you’re running it for a time on 5w30-like viscosity oil. The difference in operating temp viscosity is only ~2-3 cSt.

They’re not all that different, and people get too hung up on the numbers on the bottle rather than actually looking at the specs. 0w20 is for warranty period, and moving to a 30 weight is fine, especially in warmer temps. Bonus to use UOAs to see how wear looks with each.

As has been determined many times, the literal factory service manual by Toyota’s own beloved engineers says right in it that you can use 15W-40 and the 2GR-FKS is called out for quite a few different viscosities depending on the country. The engine isn’t “designed for” 0W-20 and no, the VVT will still work perfectly fine. It’s not a problem to run 0W-20 or 15W-40, the engine just doesn’t care.

Yep, the numbers make people think that you’re buying drastically different oil because 15 is a lot bigger than 0 and 40 is double 20. In reality they’re pretty close.

To be fair, the difference between 20 weight and 30 weight is less than 30 and 40. Just highlights how these numbers fail to tell the real story.

Well sometimes problems just seem to solve themselves. Not that this was any kind of a serious dilemma but it was an interesting discussion. Anyway I just sold the oil and 2.4L EA filter so I guess we’ll never know if mixing oil grades would’ve destroyed my engine. Class dismissed.

Looks like 0w-40 will cover all ranges.
Sounds good. I like that oil. If it is good for a turbo Audi, it is good enough for a Taco.

This makes me look even more forward to my next change with HPL P+ 0w30.

Could just pour some of each in a clear container to see if they separate.

You can do that with different weight brake fluid. Had a customer bleed his brakes on his bike and couldn’t figure out why they were mushy. They require dot 5.1 and he put dot 3 in, even says on the reservoir what type to use. “But it said on the internet that it be fine…”

Ahhh oil threads, taint they fun!?

Oil threads are great, on the bike forums not only will people argue over viscosity, but in 2-Strokes it is flash point as well. :) or what smells the best… lolz. Think Klotz usually wins for best smelling.

Even then its not that easy. Some fluids only partially intermix so that they are somewhere in between homogeneity and fully separated. That's my worry, that there might or might not be be pockets of changing viscosity in my fluid stream. If they're the same color, only a rheometer with a temperature/pressure chamber could tell you what the new properties would be, and whether they're consistent.

Even though its just an engine and not a life-critical space shuttle, I personally would not be willing to mix fluids. I would much prefer to run one type, drain it, and then run another type before coming up with homebrew blends.

Mixing the same brand of 0w20 and 5w30 is not really “mixing fluids.” They may each even start out with the same base stocks in some cases, with only different VIIs. They will be completely miscible.

OP should ask the manufacturer, or at least go over to BITOG and ask. It will be fine.

Edit: here’s a calculator for exactly this topic.

    https://www.widman.biz/English/Calculators/Mixtures.html

Using 20% 0w20 (8.7 cSt) in a mixture of 5w30 (10.5 cSt) will reduce the viscosity to 10.1 cSt.

If you're not going to use the oil, why not look up your local VoTech or auto tech school and make a donation? What better than helping out others who actually want to work on these beasts? Encourage the next generation.

Oil treads are the best on snowmobile forums...many still use 2 stroke oils, and its all about buying one thats stinkier than the other.
